Suspect in Tahoe City shooting found dead in Reno area church

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - More details have emerged from Saturday's deadly shooting in Tahoe City where Octavio Villa-Villanueva, 33, of Sparks, Nevada was killed and another man shot inside a car parked at the Boatworks Mall.

The suspect in the shooting, 52-year-old Salvador Murillo-Cabrera of Reno, was found deceased in a bathroom at St. Peter Canisius Catholic Church in the Sun Valley area of Reno on Sunday, apparently committing suicide during church services.

Detectives from the Placer County Sheriff's Office have been continuously investigating the homicide and have learned the victim and suspect were former co-workers at a restaurant near the Boatworks Mall. Their relationship was acrimonious because the suspect believed the victim was having an affair with his wife.

There has been no information uncovered that verifies this was actually true.

Murillo-Cabrera was seen at the location of the shooting moments before the murder and a car similar to one owned by him was seen fleeing the scene of the crime at a high rate of speed moments after the homicide occurred.

The handgun used in the apparent suicide is the same caliber weapon containing the same brand of ammunition used in the Tahoe City homicide. Detectives are waiting on lab results to definitively determine if the gun used in the apparent suicide is the same weapon used in the homicide.

Detectives are continuing their investigation.
