SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual joint board meeting of the Board of Trustees for the Lake Tahoe Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) will be held on Tuesday, March 26, starting at 5:00 p.m. in the LTCC Board Room L104.
The agenda will include updates on items that affect both groups:
Lake Tahoe College Promise - In its inaugural year, the Lake Tahoe College Promise has served 128 students to date. In addition to tuition-free enrollment, eligible Promise students have access to the textbook lending library, unlimited bus rides on the South Shore with the Tahoe Transportation District, free tutoring and academic counseling, and priority consideration for the LTCC Foundation's emergency book fund. Moving into the future, LTCC anticipates an increase of 5 percent for the cohort beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year. A first-year experience pilot will launch and expand services to include a dedicated Promise counselor and coordinator, an orientation program, peer mentor program, and blocked courses to create a tighter peer cohort designed to increase student success.
Gift of Literacy - The inaugural event was hosted at Lake Tahoe Community College on May 25, 2018 and included 138 students in first-grade, kindergarten, and special day classes from the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School. Last year's successful event has led to an expansion of the program; thanks to generous donations from community partners and staff time from LTCC and LTUSD, this year every first-grader in LTUSD and Zephyr Cove Elementary will participate in this enriching childhood literacy program on April 26.
Enrollment Trends - The two Boards will discuss the number of LTUSD graduates who enroll in LTCC and other colleges.
Teaching Credential Program - Brandman University began offering upper-division course work in partnership with Lake Tahoe Community College in the Lisa Maloff University Center beginning in the Fall of 2018. The Boards will discuss number.
Aligning Academic Calendars - LTCC and LTUSD have discussed aligning their calendars to create as much holiday and break alignment in the calendars as possible. The holiday and break schedules for LTCC and LTUSD are already aligned in some ways, such as Veterans Day (for which LTCC previously changed its policy to align with LTUSD), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Memorial Day. However, there were two key areas where the calendars did not align: Thanksgiving Recess and Spring Break. In the 2019/20 calendar, LTCC has agreed that no classes will be held for the entire Thanksgiving Recess and they will discuss aligning Spring Break.
Dual Enrollment - The Dual Enrollment partnership between LTUSD and LTCC is in its fourth year. There are currently 50 sections of Dual Enrollment courses being offered to South Tahoe High School students through LTCC in the 2018/19 academic year, an increase of 13 over the previous year. New courses for the 2018/19 year include HEA 147A and B Dental Assisting and Radiology, Parts 1 & 2 (15.5 units combined), CUL 102 Principles and Practices of Basic Food Preparation (4.5 units), and HTR 141D Preparing to Act on your 10-year Education and Career Plan (1.5 units), addressing the first bullet point around CTE Pathways Alignment. Additionally, PSY 101 General Psychology (4 units) was added in 2018/19, addressing the second bullet point, GE Course Development. Courses under development and consideration for the 2019/20 academic year and beyond include potential sections in Hospitality Management, Automotive Technology, English, Spanish, Mathematics, Natural Science, and Commercial Photography.
K-14 Articulation - As the State of California and Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) move toward a Standards-Based learning model, discontinuity between TK-12 student performance/assessment and college readiness will become blurred. It is recommended LTUSD and Lake Tahoe Community College convene committees to study and better understand these modalities of learning thereby facilitating smoother transitions between institutions.
After these agenda items are complete at 6:45 p.m., the LTUSD meeting will move back to their normal location and the LTCC meeting will continue their meeting in the board room.
