Local woodturner donates piece for Soroptimist charity auction

South Lake Tahoe artist Malcolm Tibbetts has once again donated one of his famous woodturning creations to the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) Elegant Evening fundraising event on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

Bids on "Ovals in the Woods" are accepted online and bidders do not have to attend the event to participate.

Tibbetts left the Heavenly management team in 2002 to start a new career that would work within his longtime love of woodworking. He is now a full-time studio artist designing, engineering and creating amazing works of art in segmented woodturning.

People can see his artwork in front of CoWork Tahoe on Lake Tahoe Boulevard or in the Marcus Ashley Gallery where he is currently on exhibit. He will be giving some live demonstrations at the gallery soon.

Malcolm Tibbetts is not only a wonderful artist and member of the Lake Tahoe community but is also a teacher and has produced many books and videos. His website is Tahoeturner.com .

"Ovals in the Woods" is a 15" vessel with segments comprised of vertical laminated layers. In his description of the process, Tibbetts said the vessel was first assembled by stacking the rings with double-sided tape, turned inside and out, taken apart, and then the rings were individually shaped on their outsides. The outsides were sanded and finished before the rings were reassembled with glue. It is made of maple and dyed veneers and finished with water-based poly.

All items up for auction for the annual Elegant Evening can be bid on by those not attending. All proceeds help with the SITS club's many causes that benefit women and youth in our community.
