Autism awareness event to be held in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of National Autism Awareness Month there is an event on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 to not only bring awareness of autism to the community with a panel discussion, but to celebrate with a silent auction, games, and food. "An Evening With Autism" will be held in the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Room from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States with its indicators normally appearing by age 2 or 3. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.

The evening is sponsored by the Tahoe/Alpine SELPA CAC (Special Education Local Plan Area Community Advisory Committee). The SELPA is provided offered through the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. SELPA is responsible for ensuring all services are provided as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), the federal law for special education. The SELPA is responsible for facilitation and interpretation of all legal requirements. It provides information and resources to families of children with disabilities so they can fully understand their rights.
