Senator Coons officiates at wedding of South Tahoe High School Ally Club founder

Our nation’s capital was the setting last weekend for the wedding of 2008 South Tahoe High School graduate Alex Boyar and Scott Schaefer of Boulder, Colorado. The newlyweds met three years ago in Washington, DC, where Alex works as the LGBTQ Finance Director for the Democratic National Committee and Scott is employed as an Associate Attorney at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, LLP.

The ceremony was officiated by Alex’s former boss and mentor, Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, who shared a number of touching and amusing anecdotes about the couple.

Senator Coons joked that it was “perfect that two gamers actually met through an online dating app” and that he was “so glad that they asked to be married in DC and in person, not online.”

"Life is a long journey and married life is inevitably filled with its seasons, Just as spring becomes summer, fall becomes winter," said Senator Coons. "Married life has its ups and downs; its mishaps and its detours. If you can hold in your hearts today’s spirit of effortless affection and respectful enthusiasm for each other, you can weave together a “we” in which each of you have your own character, traditions, and qualities. But you are much more than a me plus a me. You are a bound together “we.”

The newlyweds are currently honeymooning in Spain and will return at the end of the month to their home in Logan Circle and their beloved and somewhat spoiled rescue dog, Ginger.
