South Lake Tahoe couple launches award-winning BumpBar

No, BumpBar is not a new watering hole in South Lake Tahoe. Instead, BumpBar is a nutritious bar with the pregnant or nursing woman in mind, and is the creation of local couple Dr. Amanda Weavil, MD and Scott Weavil.

BumpBar began in 2015 when Amanda, a South Lake Tahoe OB/GYN wanted to develop a nutrition bar for her patients who were either pregnant or nursing. Something they have and not worry about the ingredients.

Scott researched the large nutrition bar market and found there were no options for sale like they had in mind, something people could eat on the go that was healthy.

"What was there was full of artificial ingredients," said Scott.

"I began working on just the right balance of nutrition, taste and convenience for a prenatal and nursing nutrition bar," said Amanda. "After baking many, many test batches, BumpBar was born."

They hired a gluten-free, vegan baker and Scott got down to distributing the tasty creation that is full of ingredients one can pronounce. Each bar contains organic cashew butter for folic acid and protein, organic flaxseed meal for iron, organic gluten free oats for energy and organic almonds for folic acid, calcium and protein. All ingredients are needed during a woman's pregnancy.

There is one flavor now, the Lemon Ginger bar, but more options are on the horizon. The lemon is to boost energy and the ginger helps with nausea, something women in there first trimester of pregnancy tend to experience.

One doesn't have to be pregnant or nursing to enjoy the Bump Bar. The fresh lemon smell once the wrapper is open isn't replicated in any other bar on the market, and they are also organic, vegan, non-GMO and preservative free. Something everyone can enjoy. (And they're healthy too!)

Their first batch was completed in June, 2016 and BumpBar is now in several stores. The Weavils have now won the Reno Gazette Journal's (RGJ) New Business of the Year award in March, 2017.

Currently the bars are baked in Chicago as their bakery met all of their needs though they'd like to bring the operation closer to home. The Weavils look to expand to a nursing bar, and BumpBars in more flavors. Their big goal for the future is to roll out a complete women's health line that help with hormones, active lifestyles, healthy hearts and osteoporosis.

"We had incredible response at the RGJ event in Reno," said Amanda. They've also had booths at events where they've talked to enthusiastic women, and look to expanding the stores they sell the bars at.

Bump Bars can be found at Grass Roots, Elevate Wellness and Tahoe Tot Spot in South Lake Tahoe, and Nurturing Nest and Great Basin Community Food Coop in Reno. A store in LeGrande, Oregon just bought several boxes to sell there. In a few years they'd like to include Whole Foods in their list of customers.

Since Scott is a lawyer and Amanda an OB/GYN, neither of them had experience in started a small business in the food area. They started attending the Entrepreneurs Assembly held monthly at Lake Tahoe Community College, something they both said gave them motivation and great tools to become successful. Other businesses share during these meetings, helping others to succeed.

Since creating the business and the bar, Amanda and Scott have created something else - a daughter. Dorothy "Dottie" Weavil was born just ten weeks ago.
