There was a mystery as to how baby "Tahoe" made her way to the doorstep of the BEAR League almost two weeks ago, but today, that mystery has been solved.
"Tahoe," who is now living with Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, was left at the BEAR League offices anonymously on April 15. According to LTWC Secretary/Treasurer Tom Milham, a man called the league on Saturday and claimed responsibility for rescuing the orphaned cub. He said he found her crying and hugging her deceased mother near the Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
The caller could not tell what the cause of death was and it was quite a distance from a road. When he notified authorities (he didn't reveal which agency) he was told to leave 'it' alone. His conscience would not allow him to walk away and leave her to die and he wrapped her in a blanket and found his way to the BEAR League.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be running DNA from her hair and blood in an attempt to pin down her origins. If it points to the general area of Humboldt Redwoods that will be where she'll be released after she matures at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.
