Community members to take snapshot of Lake Tahoe water quality after record snowpack

Event Date:
May 20, 2017 - 9:00am

The local community and visitors will be taking part in the League to Save Lake Tahoe's 17th annual Snapshot Day on Saturday, May 20 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. During this annual citizen science monitoring event, community members will collect water quality samples from dozens of Lake Tahoe’s south shore tributaries.

“This year will be interesting to see how water quality data from one of the biggest Tahoe winters on record compares with previous years’ data,” said Jesse Patterson, deputy director for the League to Save Lake Tahoe, which is organizing Snapshot Day’s South Tahoe monitoring sites. “We are excited to see the community support this critical citizen science monitoring, the data from which helps inform efforts to protect Lake Tahoe.”

Community members will gather at Lake Tahoe Community College at 9:00 a.m. to receive training before dispersing to assigned monitoring sites at South Tahoe locations at the lake, rivers and streams. Breakfast will be provided by Grass Roots Grocery and Starbucks, and a free lunch will be provided to all volunteers. Also participating are students from Lake Tahoe Community College and the University of California, Davis.

All are welcome and no prior experience is needed. League staff and trained team leaders will provide guidance for all volunteers. Learn more and RSVP at keeptahoeblue.org/rsvp.
