Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe area as well as the Reno, Carson City and Minden area for Sunday, May 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Winds are expected from the southwest at 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

After the winds, the real fun starts with snow and rain in the four-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe.

From NWS Reno:

Today - Partly sunny, with a high near 68. Light southwest wind increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.

Tonight - Partly cloudy, with a low around 39. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Sunday - A 50 percent chance of showers. Snow level 8500 feet rising to 9200 feet
in the afternoon. Partly sunny, with a high near 60. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

Sunday Night - Showers. Snow level 9400 feet lowering to 8000 feet after midnight . Low around 35. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Monday - Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Snow level 7600 feet lowering to 7100 feet in the afternoon . High near 48. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night - Rain showers likely before 8pm, then rain and snow showers likely between 8pm and 2am, then a chance of snow showers after 2am. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday - A chance of snow showers before 11am, then rain showers likely between 11am and 2pm, then rain and snow showers likely after 2pm. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tuesday Night - A chance of rain and snow showers before 11pm. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30.

NWS in Sacramento is forecasting 3" - 8" inches over the mountains to the west of Lake Tahoe. Travelers should be prepared for icy roads and possible controls over Donner Summit and Echo Summit. Ebbets Pass and Carson Pass could each see several inches of snow.
