Runners to pass through South Lake Tahoe overnight

A race from Reno, around Lake Tahoe, through the Carson Valley, up to Virginia City and back to Reno began Friday morning at 7 a.m. This is the 11th year the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure is taking place and it is growing in popularity each year. There are 253 teams of an average of 12 runners each taking part in the overnight race which covers 178 miles.

There are about 3,100 runners this year from 22 states. Each runner will run a minimum of 3 legs of the 36 segment course so expect to see activity through the South Shore. Local motels will be housing racers as they catch a couple of hours of sleep and a shower between the legs of the race they run.

South Lake Tahoe has segments 15 through 19 so expect to see runners as the sun sets (and after) as they leave Emerald Bay and head to Kingsbury Grade. Racers are expected to finish back in Reno between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

As relay runners leave Emerald Bay they'll run on Highway 89 to 15th Street and then up to Venice Drive where relay teams change runners.

The next leg heads up Tahoe Keys Blvd, down Highway 50 to Al Tahoe Blvd. Here they'll go to LTCC and change runners again.

The fresh runner will leave LTCC, go along Johnson Blvd, in front of Bijou Golf Course, up Blackwood Rd to Tamarack Ave to Ski Run Blvd. Here they'll go to Highway 50 and change runners in front of the Raley's Stateline store.

Runners will then leave South Lake Tahoe along Highway 50 and up Kingsbury Grade.

Since there are 253 teams we should expect to see 253 runners come through the area at staggered times during Friday evening.
