High Wind Warning issued for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/17/2021 - 4:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 10:00 p.m. Monday to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Expect winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected, mainly above 6500 feet. Under that elevation, winds are expected 15-25 mph with gusts 30-45 mph.
Over the ridges, winds 60-80 mph are forecast with gusts exceeding 130 mph.
The winds will be coming from the east/northeast.
The warning is mainly for the western half of the Lake Tahoe Basin, Southern Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra Counties, and northern Mono County west of Highway 395.
USFS closes more campgrounds in California due to COVID-19

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County not under shut down orders, yet
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/03/2020 - 5:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a surge of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, California Governor Newsom today issued a new regional stay-at-home order as an "emergency brake" to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
This order goes into effect in regions with less than 15 percent ICU availability. At this time, the El Dorado County does not fall into that group but it could be a matter of days until it does. The county is part of the Greater Sacramento Region which is at 22 percent capacity as of Thursday.
Three fires burning from Doyle to Walker; all fed by high winds

Due to the fast moving nature of the fire, an Evacuation Order has been issued for the Walker, Coleville and Topaz areas, and US 395 is still closed from Bridgeport to the Nevada state line. There is 0 percent containment and 5,000 acres burned according to Inci-web. Liberty Utilities has de-energized the communities of Walker and Coleville up to Topaz at the state line for safety precautions. Liberty is working with all emergency agencies and will safely restore power when possible.
Lake Tahoe storm upgraded from "watch" to "warning"

Winds are from the south to southwest winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected. There are hazardous boating conditions on Lake Tahoe with waves 3 to 6 feet from mid-lake to north and east shores.

The forecast is for gusty winds and low humidity. Northeast winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph. Higher gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible along mid-
slopes and wind-prone areas with gusts of 70+ mph along the Sierra Crest.

The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.
The combination of gusty winds and extremely dry fuels can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them, so use extreme caution.
USFS beaches and other day-use facilities around Lake Tahoe reopen Saturday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/18/2020 - 4:12pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches and other day-use areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin will re-open for day-use only beginning Saturday, Sep. 19, 2020. Camping and overnight stays will not be permitted, and campgrounds will remain closed. Resorts will reopen for day-use only. Emergency Fire Restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30. I’ve attached the Forest Orders for your awareness.
The prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National Forest System lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California remains in place.
Fire Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Thursday-Friday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/15/2020 - 7:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch to be in effect for Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. through Friday at 8:00 p.m.
Winds will be from the southwest on Thursday, shifting to west on Friday. Sustained winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph possible for both days. Strongest gusts Thursday could be US Highway 50 north and on Friday could be US Highway 50 south. Winds in valleys should weaken late Thursday evening, while Sierra ridges continue to gust in the 70-90 mph range overnight.
Forest closure orders extended in Lake Tahoe and California; Humboldt-Toiyabe reopens

This order includes the California and Nevada sides of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. On Monday, eight National Forests were closed and now an additional ten from the state have been added to the list.

They have also issued a Special Weather Statement and a Lake Wind Advisory for Tuesday from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Sheep Fire near Honey Lake is 29,517 acres and 38 percent contained, the Loyalton Fire is at 98 percent containment and 47,029 acres. The North Complex burning in Lassen and Plumas forests is 61,093 acres and 37 percent contained.

Fires covering the west; Lake Tahoe still impacted with smoke and unhealthy air
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/20/2020 - 2:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Multiple new fires, mostly from last week’s lightning, are causing a drastic decrease in air quality at Lake Tahoe and throughout the state. Another inversion is expected to set up overnight Thursday, and visibility may be impaired due to smoky conditions.
The air quality in all area communities has been around the unhealthy to very unhealthy range for the past two days. As of 3:45 p.m. Thursday, the Air Quality Index in South Lake Tahoe was 195.
Smoke and haze to continue over Lake Tahoe

As of 8:00 a.m. the Air Quality measurement in South Lake Tahoe is 82, the moderate range. Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. it jumped to 161, in the unhealthy range.

Claremont Fire near Quincy is 450 acres

It is north and east adjacent to the areas of Beckwourth Pass and Hallelujah Junction.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Sunny skies for the week ahead

There will be a gradual cool down to near normal temps through the week with chances for thunderstorms returning the middle into the end of the week. If the storms do come, they should be very widespread but dry, a definite concern for dry lightning starts.
Smoke in Lake Tahoe Basin from Northern California fires
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/02/2020 - 2:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 275-acre fire burning in Lassen National Forest is most likely to blame for smoke in the Lake Tahoe Basin and in the Reno area.
The Stump Fire started Saturday afternoon and is near State Highways 36 and 172 near Childs Meadows, in the mountains between Red Bluff and Susanville. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said some smoke could also possibly be coming from the 1,800 acre Red Salmon Complex fire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.
Normally, the Basin averages six Red Flag Warnings per season, and this makes four - and it's still July. Please remember all outdoor sources of open flame are prohibited until the Red Flag Warning declaration expires, and that includes gas/propane fire pits and grills.

Expect winds from the west 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-4 feet. Strongest winds and roughest conditions expected Saturday afternoon and evening, and then again on Sunday.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

As of 5:00 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement and rescue teams have responded to a reported head-on collision on Pioneer Trail, west of Golden Bear, a collision on Pioneer Trail and US 50 in Meyers, a collision on US 50 at Kyburz, a car off the roadway on SR89 near Emerald Bay and two collisions on US88 near Kirkwood. There are also numerous collisions on I80 and on the North Shore.

During their closed session meeting Saturday, the Board of Trustees decided to reveal their announcement ahead of the previously announced March 10 date. His contract has now been finalized and he will start work at the end of the school year.

When Ted Gaines won a seat on the California Board of Equalization in November, the Senate District 1 seat he had held since 2011 was up for grabs. In March there was an election to decide his replacement, but since no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote the top two are now on Tuesday's ballot.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 reopened to eastbound and westbound traffic this morning about 5:00 a.m. with R-2 chain controls still in effect from Point View (just above Placerville) to Meyers.
Expect extra vehicles on the roads in South Lake Tahoe as US50 is the only main artery over the Sierra that is open at this hour.

Stone, who beat out 42 potential candidates for the position, has lived in Douglas County since 2011.

New interim manager hired for Town of Genoa
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/19/2018 - 6:45amAfter losing their town manager to the Douglas County Public Works Department, the Town of Genoa has approved an interlocal agreement to appoint Melissa Blosser in their top spot.
Blosser is also Douglas County's community relations manager and public information officer and will be splitting her duties between the two roles through an interlocal agreement.
The $4,500 month-to-month contract was approved by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners on October 18, 2018. Former Town Manager Phil Ritger accepted a position as the County's new public works director.
South Lake Tahoe had a warm July; Week of 80s ahead
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/01/2018 - 9:58pmWhen looking back at the month of July, each day's high temperatures in South Lake Tahoe were above average except for one, which was equal to the high. Even though July was a warm month, no record highs were set.
After such a warm month, August is starting out much the same.

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) is calling all baggers to join them in a challenging guided day hike over two beautiful summits on the Tahoe Rim Trail system, Relay Peak (10,342’) and Mt. Houghton (10,494’) to catch that view.
Throughout the 12-mile loop, expect to see expansive views of Lake Tahoe and as far north as Lassen on a good day, plenty of wildflowers, and they’ll even throw in a waterfall in.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for Lake Tahoe on Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. as a potent Pacific storm moves inland, bringing rain and mountain snow along with those gusty winds.
