A 70-year-old man from Yuma, Arizona died after being struck by a car on Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe.
Donald Irwin was heading north while riding his 21-speed bike in the bike lane of Pioneer trail near Jicarilla Drive on the morning of June 6. A Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 35-year-old Andrus Steponovicius of Venice, CA was headed in the same direction as Irwin when he drifted right. The car's passenger side rear view mirror struck the cyclist's handlebar, causing Irwin to loose control of the bike and be ejected into the roadway. Irwin then struck his head and rolled over a number of times, suffering head injuries and considerable abrasions.
Irwin was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno where he succumbed to his injuries on June 15, 2015.
