Bread & Broth 4 Kids starts free summer food program for South Lake Tahoe youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the fourth consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth every Wednesday until school resumes in August.

Since local schools closed in March due to the coronavirus, Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) has provided weekly food bags to students at bus stops and schools in coordination with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as they distributed daily meals. Some weeks the BB4K bags went to over 410 children.

During a normal school year, BB4K gives 150-180 qualified students a bag of food each weekend that contains three dinners, two breakfasts, two lunches and snacks. That program moved to cover summer meals as well in 2017 thanks to a grant from Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam. Last summer, an average of 225 kids received a bag of food each week.

Starting Wednesday, July 1, food will be distributed from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from the foyer at St Theresa's Church Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

Children up to the age of 18 can receive the bags. They may come alone or with a parent or legal guardian to pick up a bag of free, nutritious food. Please note, food will not be given to parents without their children present.

Besides the food bags distributed at Grace Hall, bags will be delivered to local child care centers for those in their care - Apple Seeds Academy, Boys & Girls Club, Child Development Center, Choices for Children, Under the Magic Pine Tree, Step by Step, and Live Violence Free.
