Free food for South Lake Tahoe youth all summer with Bread & Broth 4 Kids program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

The 2019 food program begins June 26 and will continue every Wednesday through August 21. Food will be distributed at:

St Theresa's Church- Grace Hall

10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
1041 Lyons Avenue
South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Any child up to the age of 18 can come alone or with a parent or legal guardian to select food items. Children can fill up a bag with fresh fruit, cereals, milk, breakfast and nutrition bars, canned meat and more. Children are encouraged to bring a backpack or reusable tote bag to carry food home. Note: Food will only be given to parents who are accompanied by their child(ren).

In addition, food bags will be delivered to the following child care centers for use by children in their care: Apple Seeds Academy, Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, Child Development Center, Choices for Children, Under the Magic Pine Tree, Foster Family, and Live Violence Free.

In 2017, after a very generous donation from Rob Katz, CEO of Vail Resorts and his wife Elana Amsterdam, the BB4K program expanded from weekly school year bags to provide food weekly for children during the summer months. Last summer, 2,250 bags of food were handed out to children throughout the South Lake Tahoe community from June-August.

Their donation will support the 2019 summer effort as well. Vail Resorts owns and operates Heavenly Resort and Kirkwood Mountain, and Bread and Broth has partnered with many local employees of both organizations to distribute food to local children. Last summer, Vail employees assisted with the packing, distribution, and delivery of food to elementary school sites, and they will continue with that support this summer as well. Dozens of community volunteers join the Vail employees and help with the summer food program. If interested in helping, contact Myee Costanzo at mavecilla24@gmail.com.
