Uber teams up with South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, MADD and CHP to prevent holiday drunk driving

The California Highway Patrol and Uber are joining forces to promote awareness about safe, alternative transportation options to drunk driving during the July 4 holiday weekend.

This holiday is one of the deadliest for drunk driving crashes. South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has partnered with Uber to prevent drunk driving in South Lake Tahoe.

Uber reached out to the nonprofits to make sure that Tahoe is safe, and to do so they are trying to get as many of their drivers out on the road as possible.

To prevent drinking and driving, Uber had launched the following programs for drivers and riders:

Offer California & Nevada drivers $50 in gross fares per hour for July 1-July 3 from 11AM-2AM and on July 4 from 11AM-5PM.

For California referees ONLY, offer $750 to both referrer and referee after the referee takes 100 trips in an effort to get as many safe drivers on the road as possible.

Provide new Uber riders with a promotion code “SAFE4TH” for a free ride up to $20.

“Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable. With easy, reliable and affordable alternative transportation options like Uber, there’s no reason for anybody to get behind the wheel while impaired,” said MADD Sacramento Program Director Tina Heard. “We are proud to work with Uber to help get more safe drivers on the road.”

"The South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition is honored to work with both Uber and MADD to prevent drunk driving," said program coordinator Kelsey Magoon.

On the Nevada side, Uber has teamed with Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) for a campaign that runs from 6/30 to 7/5. They are offering discounted ride codes that will cover any new user’s ride up to $15; $5 from each ride will be donated to MADD. With increased enforcement over the weekend, participating law enforcement agencies will distribute Uber discount ride cards during routine traffic stops to help spread the message of choosing a sober ride.
