Barton labor & delivery nurse wins international DAISY Award®

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A nurse at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Family Birthing Center has received the international DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. Labor & Delivery nurse, Rayanne Marshall, RN, BSN, RNC-OB, won the award after being nominated by a patient for the dedication and compassion shown during delivery, making her feel comfortable and well-cared for, even when tensions were high.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A benefit performance of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues will be held February 21-22 in the MontBleu Convention Center. Known as "V-Day South Lake Tahoe," the 18th annual event will raise funds for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in the community.

The goal is to raise $15,000 for Live Violence Free, the locally-based nonprofit that provides the tools and resources necessary for these survivors to rebuild, gain independence and thrive.

Barton's 11th annual Festival of Trees & Lights returns to South Shore

V&T Railway 2019 season begins with Mother’s Day train

Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m.

Tickets are $45 for adults, $40 for seniors and $25 for children ages 3 to 16. Children two and under ride free when they sit on a parent's lap. Tickets can be purchased online at www.vtrailway.com or (877) 724-5007.

Terrorism of 9/11 was call to duty for South Lake Tahoe police officer

September 11th, 2001 terrorists shocked the nation as Americans all across the country watched the twin towers fall. The tragic events that day changed the lives of many Americans. Some lost their mothers, fathers, sisters, friends, and brothers, and for some, like Officer Traci Trapani of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), the events of that day were a call to duty to protecting the general welfare of the American public against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues will be held in South Lake Tahoe February 22-23 at MontBleu Resort.

Originally scheduled for the LTCC Duke Theater, the fundraiser had to move due to some broken water pipes in the theater on Tuesday.

The Vagina Monologues returns for its 17th year in South Lake Tahoe with a goal this year of raising $15,000 for scholarships for female-identified students at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Column: SLTPD and EDSO saves woman's life with arrest

After a six-month investigation into drug transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the El Dorado Sheriff's Department Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at two locations in South Lake Tahoe on August 23, 2017. Large amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and approximately 12 firearms were seized in the search. Lynwood Towle, Shawn German, Melissa Griffis, Paul Ryan, and Krystal Long were all arrested, charged, and eventually pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from those searches.

First baby of 2019 arrives in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first baby of the new year has arrived in South Lake Tahoe at Barton Health's Family Birthing Center. On January 2, 2019 at 5:38 p.m., a baby boy weighing in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. and 21" long was born to local residents Mordey and Shaina Richler.

This is the fourth child for the Richlers, who run Chabad Jewish Center. As customary with his parent's faith, Baby Richler will be named when he is eight days old.

Convicted El Dorado County puppy broker gets another 240 days in jail

An El Dorado Hills woman who was convicted of felony animal cruelty charges in 2016 has been sentenced to an additional 240 days of jail time for violating the conditions of her felony probation. The jail sentence was handed down in El Dorado County Superior Court on November 9, 2018.

Ginger Turk, 48, a puppy broker, has had many run-ins with the law over the years due to her illegal practice of importing tiny, under-aged, un-weaned, high-priced ($4,000+) puppies from South Korea and selling them over the internet and in person.

Dr. Megan Jewell has joined the team at Barton Health as its newest OB/GYN physician. Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Jewell’s credentials tout a da Vinci® Surgery certification in benign gynecology. Dr. Jewell joins Barton Health in a time of momentum as the health care system has been recently been recognized for its quality and safety standards for women’s health in the local community.

Two STHS football players commit to play at next level

Two more football players out of South Tahoe High School have committed to play for Division 3 schools, both schools that excel in academics as well as athletics.

Caleb Moretti, who moved to STHS from Whittell High School for his senior year, will be going to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana to play linebacker for the "Fightin' Engineers." Moretti, who carries a 4.2 GPA will be majoring in Computer Science.

NHP and MADD team up to keep Nevada highways safe

The Nevada Highway Patrol Association (NHPA) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) announced a new strategic partnership today. The partnership will combine the NHPA's goal of continued safety on Nevada's highways and MADD's goals to end drunk and drugged driving, support victims of drunk driving, and bring an end to underage drinking.

Special Mother's Day train to Virginia City

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will once again offer special train rides over the Mother's Day weekend, May 13-14, that will take moms and families from Carson City to Virginia City aboard a historic train.

All mothers will be honored with a long-stem rose as they board the 1953 ALCO (American Locomotive Company) heritage diesel locomotive for the 16 mile trip to the Comstock-era town of Virginia City.

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods 1927-2017

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods, 89, passed away January 16, 2017 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. Ruth was born on Labor Day, September 5, 1927 in Santa Rosa, California. Her mother used to say, “What an appropriate day for Ruth to be born, on Labor Day.”

She was an only child, the loving and devoted daughter of Percy Brunell and Helen Patricia LeCornec Hanson. She was raised in Santa Rosa and attended area schools and graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1945. She married Norman C. Woods on April 13, 1947, at St. Rose Catholic Church, in Santa Rosa.

The Vagina Monologues returns for its 15th year in South Lake Tahoe on February 25 and 25 for two shows at the Beach Retreat & Lodge. The unforgettable event is two evenings of sharing prose, pain, love, laughter and life. The cast is made up of a diverse group of community members including students, mothers, daughters, sisters new-to-the-stage and seasoned performers.

Fatalities on Nevada's roads rose in 2016

It wasn't record setting, but it was disturbing for safety officials in Nevada to read the reports that more people died on Nevada roads in 2016 than the previous year.

Preliminary data shows that 327 traffic fatalities occurred on the state's roads in 2016, one more death than in 2015. There were five more crashes, more pedestrians deaths by vehicles (5), and more motorcyclist deaths (21).

Alcohol related crashes and deaths decreased in 2016, with 11.46 percent fewer deaths and 15.38 percent fewer crashes relating to drunk driving.

Uber teams up with South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, MADD and CHP to prevent holiday drunk driving

The California Highway Patrol and Uber are joining forces to promote awareness about safe, alternative transportation options to drunk driving during the July 4 holiday weekend.

This holiday is one of the deadliest for drunk driving crashes. South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has partnered with Uber to prevent drunk driving in South Lake Tahoe.

Uber reached out to the nonprofits to make sure that Tahoe is safe, and to do so they are trying to get as many of their drivers out on the road as possible.

Local children treated to gifts and banquet by Tahoe Douglas Rotary

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club recently held their annual Children's Christmas party and traditional turkey dinner at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. On the guest list were families from both Live Violence Free and Sierra Child and Family Services. Thirty families and 80 children enjoyed an afternoon of food, entertainment, a visit from Santa and gifts.

South Lake Tahoe community takes care of each other during holidays

The Christmas spirit has been evident all through the South Shore over the past few weeks as many people and non-profit agencies have been blessed with donations of money, food and gifts to help make the holidays a bit brighter.

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose filled up 40 boxes with hams and food for families at Tahoe Valley Elementary school. The students decorated the boxes.

Authorities don't want repeat of 'bear selfie' craze

During the 2014 Kokanee salmon run at Taylor Creek, spectators left pathways at the popular U.S. Forest Service Visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe to approach bears in search of a selfie photo with a bear. Not only was this dangerous for the human, it was dangerous for the bear and USFS threatened to close the area to the public.

Police officers honored during South Lake Tahoe ceremony

Rain may have moved the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as the South Lake Tahoe Police Department honored some of their own on Thursday in honor of National Peace Officer's Memorial Day.

"We are normal people who are asked to do extraordinary tasks," SLT Police Chief Brian Uhler told the audience of the officer's families, friends, City Council, city staff, community members and other area law enforcement including the El Dorado County Sheriff, CHP and the FBI.

Local health officers have a common recipe for keeping their counties’ children healthy: Make sure children and their parents have ready access to doctors. Provide prenatal care for young mothers. Educate families on healthy habits. Keep kids active and in school.

Richard Swanson Family, Police Officers and Citizens Honored During South Lake Tahoe Ceremony

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department used Peace Officer Memorial Week to honor a few of their own along with some local citizens on Thursday.

In a ceremony in front of the police station, Police Chief Brian Uhler bestowed the following awards:

- Dispatcher Jillian Broadfoot awarded for Meritorius Service
- Todd and Zetta Friedel and Cory Escobar received the Citizen Award of Merit

Group works to find and name South Lake Tahoe area peak in memory of fallen soldiers

At the urging of Congressman Tom McClintock, R-Calif., a committee has been formed to find an unnamed mountain peak seen from South Lake Tahoe that will be dedicated to fallen U.S. soldiers from the area.
Congressman McClintock's office approached the U.S. Forest Service about opportunities for a memorial. Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson came up with the idea of naming an unnamed peak as one of the options for a memorial on National Forest System lands.

Ready for the wild: Tahoe bear cubs rehabilitated and set free

Three bear cubs, nursed back to health by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Inc., were released into the wild this week.
The bears, each close to a year old, were brought to the South Lake Tahoe facility last summer where they were found malnourished and without mothers.
The California Department of Fish and Game released one of the cubs, a female, north of Truckee on Tuesday and two were taken to Alpine County on Wednesday. The cubs were put into winter dens made by Fish and Game biologists.
