Douglas County students participate in gang resistance training program

Forty soon-to-be eighth grade students from Pau-Wa-Lu and Carson Valley middle schools just wrapped up a two-week summer program with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO). The annual G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program has lessons from Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Wiggins which wrapped up with a four-day adventure event at Lake Tahoe.

The students kayaked on Lake Tahoe, hiked at Spooner Lake and performed community service by picking up trash at the Zephyr Cove beach. Thanks to the DCSO community partners at Heavenly Mountain Resort and their Epic Promise grant, the students were able to enjoy all the new summer activities up on the mountain including the zip line, roller coaster, ropes course and rock wall climb. They also enjoyed their “heavenly” lunch on the mountain and said they hope to soon return with their families to make more wonderful memories.

This is the first time supervising GREAT SUMMER for Deputy Chris Wiggins who is new to Youth Services while Deputy Teresa Duffy has enjoyed 10 years with the youth in the GREAT activities.
