It's a holiday on the 7th hole during celebrity golf in Lake Tahoe

What started out twelve years ago as five friends in Lake Tahoe for a bachelor's party and a day of fun at American Century Championships (ACC) has morphed into an iconic event that has taken on a life of its own at Edgewood Tahoe's 7th hole.

“It's like Christmas and New Years on one day,“ explained one of the original five, John Parillo in describing the atmosphere at the hole on Thursdays of the tournament (the Celebrity Pro-Am day).

As they entered the ACC tournament that first year the friends quickly found the 7th. "It was the closest hole and we didn't have to walk far," said Blake Mori, another one of the originals.

Once there they called out fun insults to the celebrity golfers that resulted in witty banter between them, and even wagers, making a whole day of entertainment on both sides of the ropes.

Each year Mori and Parillo's group grew, as did their banter with the celebrities. The Sacramento area group of friends became so popular the celebrities sought them out each year.

Jon Miller, President of Programming for NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network, was so impressed with how "the boys" entertained both the celebrities and the gallery he had this to say back in 2015: "I don't know if any have seen but he already tweeted something out from his experience on the seventh hole yesterday with the great knuckleheads who come down from Sacramento. And he tweeted, this is the best golf hole ever. Well, when Justin Timberlake tweets something he tweets it to 46.3 million followers. So that's the size of a few small countries."

That year Miller allowed "the boys" to put a tent on the hole to advertise their business, Wimzr, and the antics continued to grow. That was Timberlake's first year at Lake Tahoe for the tournament, and as he approached the hole he got down onto the ground to "hide" from the group and sneak onto the tee.

"I've heard about you," Timberlake said and the group of friends started to serenade him with a Backstreet Boys song.

And now Timberlake supplies the Wimzr tent with cases of his tequila, Sauza 901. In 2016, the popular star couldn't play during the Thursday pro-am as he had a concert in Los Angeles. Justin facetimed the group at the 7th, apologizing for not being there.

This year will be the official reunion between Timberlake and the group. “Its pretty amazing,” said Parillo of how far this experience has taken them.

A video shot on the 7th hole in 2014 has gone viral with over one million views. Many may remember the day that now former American football linebacker A.J. Hawk tackled one of "the boys," Ben Heaps. They followed that up with another epic tackle (in photo above), and then last year's inflatable cylinder that Hawk tackled and Heaps went flying down the fairway.

What will happen this year? No secrets have been divulged so we'll all have to wait for Thursday, July 12. It will be as spontaneous as possible though South Tahoe Now did give try to give them some ideas.

There are now more than 45 people in the core group at hole #7, but they have attracted their own gallery and dozens more come to see what "the boys" have in store each year. One may find it hard to figure out who is more entertaining, the celebrity golfers, or the groups of friends.

The wimZr tent on the hole is all about an interactive event app that Parillo and Mori's company created.

Those attending the American Century Golf can download their free app to get an ever better experience of the Lake Tahoe event.

"We should be able to have a couple of players come on and do some Q&A during the tournament," said Mori. "We did that with Terrell Owens for other event where the fans interacted and asked questions in an open forum with just those using wimzr participating."

Mori and Parillo created the app in 2014 and it is now used in 100 countries, 2000 cities and is the official app of celebrity sporting events and big time music festivals.

"The goal behind app to enhance the experience before arriving at the event so people can hit the ground running for the time of their lives," explained Mori. "It is very social, provide best and most fun possible time. Most updated info on the event."

And for Celebrity Golf, app users will have a bonus: a wimZr after party on Thursday at MontBleu Resort's Opal Lounge at 9:00 p.m. App users will get in free.

But, before that party will be the party on the now infamous hole #7 where everyone who steps into the tee box is fair game for what "the boys" can come up with.

"New players will come to the hole and say 'I've heard about you guys since Monday’" said Mori. "95-99 percent of them love it, letting loose and having fun. We’re not worried about autographs. We just make it fun for them to come and get messed with."

"It’s the best fan-celebrity engagement at any event," Parillo said of the atmosphere at the hole.

"It shows a side of the celebrities most never see, they are doing it because they are seriously having a blast without the camera," added Mori.

So what will happen in 2017? Stop by the 7th hole and find out.
