Second victim in fatal Truckee plane crash identified

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the person who died following Tuesday's plane crash in Truckee as Peter C. Jackson, 55, of West Hollywood, Calif.

Shortly before 7:40 a.m. on July 17, 2018, the single-engine piston Navion-B crashed near the Northstar golf course on the west side of Highway 267, not far from the Truckee-Tahoe Airport.

The pilot, 60-year-old Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael, Calif., left the airport and was heading east at 7:33 a.m. and almost immediately reported engine problems and put out a May Day call. He was trying to return to the airport when the crash occurred, a mile away according to an airport spokesperson.

Whittall-Scherfee died at the scene and Jackson died shortly after arriving at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

An autopsy was performed July 18 at the Medical Examiner’s Office. The forensic pathologist performing the autopsy determined Jackson’s cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.

A third person on board was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. Their current condition is unknown.
