SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Manager Joe Irvin, recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from ICMA, the International City/County Management Association. Irvin is one of over 1,300 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program.
Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger Toy Drive for Christmas Cheer a big success

It was the first year the Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger at Stateline held a toy drive for the South Shore, and it was a big success with organizer Dreu Murin saying over $10,000 worth of toys donated to children in the community.
Christmas Cheer, the South Lake Tahoe nonprofit that helps feed locals in need all year was also in need of toys to help bring joy during such trying times. Tom Davis of Christmas Cheer joined up with Murin and other community members to organize the event which brought toys from far and wide to Lake Tahoe on December 6.
New supervisor named for Lake Tahoe Basin

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has announced that William “Bill” Jackson has been selected as the new Forest Supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Jackson is scheduled to arrive at the LTBMU on Dec. 6, 2020, and comes to the area from the White River National Forest in Colorado, where he served as the District Ranger for the Dillon Ranger District.

On October 31, 2016 I wrote an editorial "Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork" due to a growing vibe of discourse and anger across the country as well as in South Lake Tahoe.
Since we are once again in the midst of a contentious national election I saw a need to once again look at the definition of community as we focus on our local situation in El Dorado County and Douglas County.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded scholarships to a group of local students from South Tahoe High, George Whittell High, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy and Lake Tahoe Community College. The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.

STATELINE, Nev. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released more information on Thursday's fatal motorcycle crash on Kingsbury Grade/SR-207.
At approximately 2:23 p.m. on June 11, NHP troopers were dispatched to a fatal collision involving three motorcycles at the curve between Palisades Drive and Katherine Court in Stateline, Nevada.

Although Western Nevada College has delayed its commencement ceremony to honor its 2020 graduation class because of COVID-19, the college is proud to announce and congratulate its list of graduates.
Following the spring semester 2020, 650 students have graduated with 692 degrees and certificates. Eighteen of those were given to residents around Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once again, Vail Resorts' CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam are giving back to the communities where their employees live and where their company operates.
Today, they announced a donation of more than $2.5 million to provide immediate support to those areas as all contend with the severe impacts of COVID-19.
Immediate emergency relief grants will total $1.5 million and will be distributed to communities including South Lake Tahoe.

Starting Monday, the Keys Cafe is offering free breakfast to children in grades K-6th with 30 percent off for parents. Keys Cafe is located at 2279 Lake Tahoe Blvd. #2, South Lake Tahoe. Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe chosen for innovative cat training program

Supported by the Petco Foundation, this innovative program aims to increase feline adoption rates and maintain cat “mojo.”

PG&E possibly cutting power to 206K customers due to winds and fire danger

Due to severe wind concerns, PG&E has notified 209,000 customers in 15 counties they may have to proactively turn off power for safety reasons in Northern California beginning late Wednesday evening. 9.6.19 Update: At this time Echo Summit will be closed for 14 days starting on October 18, 2019.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to a delay in receiving needed supplies, the Caltrans contractor working on the US 50 Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct project will be moving their expected full road closure date.
Caltrans today told the South Lake Tahoe City Council it is looking more like mid-October for their closing the artery between the lake and Sacramento for up to 14 days. They said the actual closure date is still a moving target.

In 2007, just as the Angora fire was breaking, Amy Jackson hurriedly attempted to pack her belongings, not knowing what the outcome would be. As she did so, she remembered that she had promised a young 8th-grade boy that if he met her with his birth certificate verifying his age, that she would help cover his fee for AYSO soccer that year. She thought of what to do? I better go, she decided. As she approached their neighborhood in Bijou, she encountered not only the one boy she had promised to meet, but many other boys as well. Stefon Jefferson, a 43-year-old man from the San Francisco area, started Friday off by allegedly fatally shooting a man in Oakland at 10:14 a.m., another in San Francisco at 1:27 p.m. and a third in Berkeley at 2:40 p.m.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Murder suspect Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman will be tried jointly in Reno, Nevada by both the Douglas County and Washoe County district attorneys in what could be a landmark case.
During a joint press conference Monday, the DAs from both counties outlined their case against Martinez-Guzam for the murders of Connie Koontz, Sophia Renken, Gerald David and Sharon David.

Western Nevada College has released the names of their Fall 2018 Dean's List, one of its largest dean’s lists in years. On the list are 373 students, accounting for 31.1 percent of the college’s full-time students.
Also on the list are residents of South Lake Tahoe, Marla Bay, Zephyr Cove and Stateline. To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

PG&E cutting power to 70,000 Sierra Foothills customers due to fire danger

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is in emergency mode in extreme fire-risk areas in Butte, Sierra, Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Amador, Plumas, Calaveras and Yuba counties due to Red Flag warnings by the National Weather Service. These shutoffs will affect about 70,000 customers.
South Lake Tahoe is served by Liberty Utilities and not part of the utility company's plan to start proactively shutting off power for safety as early as 5 p.m. Sunday and continuing through the evening.

STATELINE, Nev. - Fans of pop star Janet Jackson have been waiting a long time to see her on tour, and after Friday night's concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys they can say it was worth the wait.
Jackson had to put a halt to her 2015 tour and have surgery, then her tour ended again in 2016 after she announced her pregnancy. Now she has hit the road with her long-awaited State of the World Tour.
Second victim in fatal Truckee plane crash identified

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the person who died following Tuesday's plane crash in Truckee as Peter C. Jackson, 55, of West Hollywood, Calif.
Shortly before 7:40 a.m. on July 17, 2018, the single-engine piston Navion-B crashed near the Northstar golf course on the west side of Highway 267, not far from the Truckee-Tahoe Airport.

The circus business was the source of much of his enduring fame. He established "P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome", a traveling circus, menagerie, and museum of "freaks", which adopted many names over the years.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services inaugural 5k Fun Run a success

Tahoe Youth & Family Services held their inaugural Carson Valley Days 5k Walk, Jog Run on Saturday, June 9, and it was a great success with almost 100 participants. All funds raised will go to help the agency' mentoring and support programs.
It was a very windy start to the race, which was held on the Carson Valley Days parade route prior to its start. It wasn't just the weather trying hamper the race, a heavy response from law enforcement and fire fighting personnel
heading to an emergency south of the parade route caused delays for the race.

South Tahoe High sent off 190 graduates on Friday during ceremonies at the school's football fields, with many heading to college and others to start their careers.
Mt. Tallac celebrates their 76 graduates

"Congratulations on completing the first act of your lives," Keynote Speaker Leon Malmud told the graduates of Mt. Tallac High School Friday. "Leave charged with a sense of possibilities.
Malmud, a South Lake Tahoe resident and author who survived WWII by being hidden by a French family, gave the 76 students a list of lessons as they go forward:
Be Kind to Everyone
Kindness will pay you back
Be credible, people will trust you for your credibility, the core of your existence
Do not work for fools, work for people you like
It is okay to be wrong
