Flash flood watch for Lake Tahoe, Reno, Carson Valley and Mono County

Smoke from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite continues to move into the Lake Tahoe Basin. On Sunday, that smoke will be joined by clouds and a 50 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms starting after 12:00 p.m. and going into the evening.

On Saturday, hail and rain was very scattered, with people in the Kingsbury Grade and Heavenly Valley area seeing several minutes of a hail storm accompanied by heavy rain, with areas west of Ski Run Boulevard not seeing a drop of rain.

Locally heavy rain will keep the flash flood potential around at least through Monday according to the National Weather Service in Reno. High pressure will build mid to late week for a decrease in thunderstorms and a return to hot temperatures.

The stubborn Ferguson Fire was active along most every front Saturday as it grew to 30,493 acres and fire crews worked to bolster lines and keep containment to 6%. Firefighters attempted a direct attack on the portion of the fire on the Stanislaus National Forest but terrain and fire behavior forced them to backoff midday as conditions grew too dangerous to safely engage. Mandatory evacuations remain in place. The fire is northeast of the town of Mariposa.
