SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT:

ACTIVE WEATHER WEEK AHEAD

A winter storm is likely to impact the Sierra and western Nevada region starting on Tuesday and lasting through Thursday of this week. Heavy wet snow for the mountains, gusty winds, and valley rain showers are expected during this time.

Periods of strong south to southwest wind gusts of 30-40 mph are likely for the western Nevada valleys with potentially higher gusts for wind prone areas, such as exposed parts along Hwy 395 in Lassen County and Washoe Valley as well as US 95 near Walker Lake. The Sierra ridges can see gusts of around 60-80 mph.

The main concern with precipitation is for areas of northeast California, including Lassen and Plumas counties, where recent heavy rains have made impacts already. With more significant rainfall expected for this region, runoff issues are likely in

flood prone spots where drains could be blocked. The Feather and Susan rivers could also be a concern regarding minor river flooding.

Heavy, wet snow will be an issue for the Tahoe Basin southward into Mono County. With significant snowfall expected for elevations above 6000 feet, snow load concerns are heightened for mountain towns such as South Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes. Travel could also be very difficult, especially over the Sierra passes.

Not much precipitation is forecast for western Nevada due to limited spillover. By Thursday morning, snow showers can be possible down to valley floors as colder air moves into the region.

WINTER STORM WATCH

IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT

* WHAT… Heavy, wet snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 3-10 inches above 6000 feet. For areas above 7000 ft, 1-3 feet is possible. Winds could gust as high as 80 mph.

* WHERE… Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Mono County.

* WHEN… From Tuesday morning through late Wednesday night.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS… The heavy, wet snow will heighten snow load concerns for higher towns such as South Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes. Travel could also be very difficult, especially over the Sierra passes. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes. Strong winds along with heavy wet snow could cause tree damage and power outages.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress in layers with your Gore-Tex Jacket or Shell. Take good gloves, a hat or beanie, and wear a Helmet for Safety. Also wear Good Goggles (Yellow/Bronze/Rose) or Sunglasses (100% UV protection). Don’t forget to use sunscreen if the sun pops out and stay hydrated at altitude!

SURFACE CONDITIONS: Surface Conditions are primarily Fresh Snow over Machine Groomed & Skier-Rider Tracked & Packed Powder.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Stay on designated Opened Trails only. Respect all rope lines & area closures.Ski or Ride with a Buddy if you decide to go Off Piste – Trees or opened trails. Keep an eye out for marked and unmarked obstacles. Stay away from Tree Wells… Slow Down and observe safety signs on trails with high concentration of skiers and riders… Know the Code! Always stay in control. Be able to avoid objects and people in your Path! Please stop to side of the run where it is safe and always check uphill for skiers and riders before restarting downhill.
