Update: Over 500,000 acres burned in the West

8/5/14 9:15 a.m. update: Rains in Northern California on Monday did little to penetrate the canopy of the raging fires according to Bald Fire Inicident Command, but the fire did burn less actively. As of Tuesday morning, the lightening caused fire has consumed 39,850 acres and is 30% contained. Nearly 1,000 fire fighters are on the fire.

The other large fire near the town of Burney, the Eiler Fire, is now 20% contained and it has burned 28,600 acres. The estimate date for full containment is August 20th and for the Bald Fire, August 17th.

8/3/14 9:15 p.m. update: The USDA Fire Mapping Program released a map today, showing the active fires across the west. Each number below corresponds with a number on the map:

1- Reeves Creek Fire is 75% contained and has burned 204 acres
2- Lodge Fire is 10% contained and has burned 2,700 acres
3- July Complex is 100% contained and has burned 5,523 acres
4- KNF Beaver Fire is 1% contained and has burned 7,001 acres
5- Coffee Fire is 5% contained and has burned 3,400 acres
6- Beaver Complex is 10% contained and has burned 32,632 acres
7- Camp Creek is several small lightening caused fires. No #s yet.
8- Little Deer Fire is 21% contained and has burned 4,000 acres
9- Eiler Fire is 0% contained and has burned 25,900 acres
10- Logging Unit Fires are 85% contained and have burned 10,447 acres.
11- Bald Fire is 5% contained and has burned 39,600 acres
12- Day Fire is 45% contained and has burned 12,850 acres
13- Sand Fire is 100% contained and has burned 4,240 acres
14- Chiwaukum Fires are 33% contained and have burned 15,747 acres
15- Lone Mountain 1 Fire is 30% contained and has burned 2,116 acres
16- Sniption Fire is 100% contained and has burned 25,937 acres
17- El Portal Fire is 96% contained and has burned 4,689 acres
18- Carlton Complex Fire is 82% contained and has burned 251,698 acres
19- South Fork Complex is 0% contained and has burned 16,581 acres
20- Haystack Complex Fires are 98% contained and have burned 1,814 acres
21- French Fire is 30% contained and has burned 12,827 acres

23- Kitten Complex Fire is 90% contained and has burned 22,700 acres

8/3/14 6:22 p.m. update: The Eiler Fire burning near the town of Burney has grown to almost 23,000 acres. There is a town meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the Fall River High School in McArthur, CA. According to the website updating fire figures, " the fire should continue to spread north, east and southeast. Resistance to control is very high." There is no line of containment around the fire as of Sunday.

The Bald Fire, eight miles southeast of Fall River Mills and not far from Burney, has burned 34,832 acres and is just 5% contained.

Original 8/2/14 story:

The closest fire to the Lake Tahoe basin, the Sand Fire near Plymouth, CA, is now 100% contained.

14 fires are currently burning in the state, the largest being the Day Fire in Modoc County. To date, 12,700 acres have burned and the fire is 20% contained. The Lodge Fire in Mendocino County is 10% and has burned 1,800 acres. The French Fire south of Yosemite and east of the town of Oakhurst has burned 11,466 acres. That fire was started by an abandoned campfire and authorities are asking for the public's help in finding the person(s) involved. The El Portal Fire outside of Yosemite is now 89% contained and has burned 4,689 acres.

The rest of the current fires are burning south of the Oregon border. The Eiler Fire in Lassen National Forest has burned 7,029 acres and is 0% contained, the Bald Fire, also in Lassen, has burned 26,205 acres and is 5% contained, the July Complex at the CA/OR border is now 100% contained with 4,175 acres burned.

Washington and Oregon are still experiencing massive wildfires, the biggest of which is the Carlton fire in Washington's Okanogan- Wenatchee Forest which has burned 251,698 acres and is now 71% contained.

Cal Fire reports that while this year has seen more fires than 2013, less acreage has burned. Through July 26, 3,616 fires have been reported in the state with 40,236 acres burned. During the same period last year there were 3,035 fires burning 67,980 acres.
