Seven inmates injured in Carson City prison fight

A fight between two inmates Tuesday at the Warm Springs Correctional Center in Carson City resulted in one of the prisoners being flown by Care Flight to a Reno hospital after he was shot by guards with rubber pellets, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. Six others were injured.

The fight broke out during the evening meal session in the prison's dining area. Officers immediately gave verbal commands to stop fighting. The officers’ commands were ignored by the two inmates. A blank round was fired. The inmates continued to fight and ignored the officers’ orders to stop, according to NDOC.

With verbal commands issued prior to each round being fired and the two inmates continuing to fight, a total of three rubber pellet rounds were fired. After the third round, the two inmates stopped fighting, staff and the medical team responded and took control of the scene.

One of the fighting inmates experienced wounds from the rubber pellet rounds and was flown by Care Flight to Renown Hospital in Reno where he remains as of Wednesday.

The other inmate involved in the fight received wounds consistent with fighting, was seen and treated by NDOC medical and released to his cell.

Five other inmates not involved in the fight received superficial wounds from the rubber pellets, were treated on-site by NDOC medical and released to their cells.
After the fight, inspectors from the NDOC Office of Inspector General arrived on site to start the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available.
