The South Lake Tahoe Slow Rollers are asking the local community to help them attempt breaking the world record for people riding bikes in a single line, which is 917. During the first attempt two years ago there were plenty of cyclists, 1188, but many people rode two or more across and sometimes had gaps in the line so it was too hard for officials to certify the ride.
On September 18, starting at 4 p.m., riders will start the 2.3 mile route at Treehaven Drive behind Safeway, proceed down Johnson Lane to Al Tahoe Blvd to the new bike path, ending at MacDuff's on Fremont Avenue.
All riders must preregister and pay the $5 entry fee in order for the ride to count in the record books.
Rules for the ride: single file (extremely important), no more than three bike lengths between riders, no children under 6 riding by themselves.
Organizers want the record to count at this attempt so the specific rules must be followed.
Costumes are encouraged. There will be a large party at MacDuff's following the ride as well as the awarding of the "Best in Show" award.
Pre-registration can be done at Sports LTD, South Shore Bikes, The Village and Sierra Cycle Works.
