Douglas County prepares for quick campaign stop by President Trump

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After being moved from a planned speaking event at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, President Trump will be making a stop at the Minden-Tahoe Airport on Saturday, September 12 according to a Douglas County spokesperson.

Douglas County was contacted by the Secret Service and representatives of the Trump Campaign late in the evening on Wednesday September 9, 2020 requesting use of the Minden-Tahoe Airport for a campaign rally.

Man who was arrested with stolen vehicle in Douglas County allegedly posed as FBI agent

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A man posing as an FBI agent allegedly stole an Audi in Los Angeles on April 29 and ended up crashing that same vehicle in Douglas County on May 1.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), Fabian Campos drove that car into Carson City where the Carson City Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspected stolen vehicle and a pursuit ensued on US395. DCSO took over when it crossed the county line.

Virtual Town Hall debate for Douglas County commission candidates

Suspect arrested after leading law enforcement on chase in Nevada with stolen car

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The driver of a stolen Audi has been arrested after leading law enforcement on a chase from Carson City to Minden along US395.

On May 1, at 11:45 a.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) located a red Audi two-door vehicle stolen out of California and attempted to pull it over. The driver failed to stop and led CCSO on a chase into Douglas County.

They requested assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) who then took over the pursuit.

Douglas County crash claims life of 70-year-old woman

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released the name of the 70-year-old woman killed in a Feb. 28 crash on US-395 south of Johnson Lane in Minden.

At 9:02 p.m., NHP troopers responded to the serious injury crash involving three people in two vehicles.

Douglas County man arrested after allegedly shooting at roommates

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - On Thursday, July 25 the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the Johnson Lane area of Minden at 10:15 p.m. after being dispatched to a reported shooting. A man had allegedly shot a firearm at his roommates. No one was injured in the shooting and the roommates were able to get to safety.

Precautionary Boil Water Notice issued for some Douglas County residents

Update 6/6: The precautionary “Boil Water Notice” issued to the East Valley Water System, Skyline Service area has been rescinded. All required bacteriological sample test results indicate the water supply is safe for normal use.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Residents in the Skyline Service Area of the East Valley Water System in Douglas County are being told to boil water after a computer failure resulted in low water pressure. Authorities expect to rescind the boil water notice by Friday, June 7.

Sandbags available for area residents at several locations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Douglas County and the City of South Lake Tahoe are urging residents to prepare for the possibility of flooding and high winds as a storm with high winds and heavy rain enters the region.

Douglas County has sandbags available at nine locations and urges residents to assemble them on their property if there is a chance of flooding. Sandbag locations can are self-fill and the current locations are:

Snowglobe 2018 is now in the books. There have been some successes as well as some difficulties. This year saw the introduction of professional sound engineers to help reduce the sound and new field protection to prevent further damage to our new play fields. The sound is reported to have been improved for many though the people who live nearest this event in Pioneer Village, along the Bijou Meadow, around Johnson Lane and in Sierra Tract continue to be bombarded by three days of sound.

Johnson Lane residents invited to attend drainage master plan presentation

Residents will have the opportunity to meet with drainage experts regarding the study results related to their neighborhood and flood zone. The ADMP was funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and with matching funds provided by Douglas County.

Two Douglas County businesses cited for selling liquor to minors

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) went to 27 local businesses on February 1 to conduct an operation to make sure they were being compliant with state law with reference to alcohol sales to minors.

The following 25 businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check and did not sell alcohol to a minor.

Johnson Lane residents invited to meeting on area drainage master plan

Douglas County hit and run victim identified

A Gardnerville resident has been identified as the victim in Saturday's fatal hit and run accident in Minden, Nevada.

21-year-old Roberto Palomar-Espinoza was killed after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Fremont Street and Johnson Lane. Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at 5:00 a.m. and found the victim in the street with significant physical trauma.

Fatal pedestrian hit and run in Douglas County

A male pedestrian has died from injuries sustained in a hit and run crash in Minden early Saturday morning.

At 5:00 a.m. July 1, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of Fremont Street and Johnson Lane for a possible injured person in the roadway.

Upon arrival, deputies found a male in the roadway with significant physical trauma from being hit by a vehicle. He succumbed to those injuries.

Toddler dies of injuries received in Carson Valley crash

A toddler girl has died after receiving major injuries in a three-car crash on US395 near Johnson Lane on January 17, 2017.

The deadly crash occurred when a pickup truck towing a utility trailer ran into the back of a Nissan who was traveling northbound on the highway when it slowed for traffic near the Johnson Lane intersection. The preliminary investigation shows the truck couldn't stop and ran into the back of the Nissan, forcing it off the road. It then continued through the intersection and ran into the back of a Honda that was stopped in the left lane.

Nevada starts to clean up after floods; Roads remain closed including Kingsbury Grade

Many roads in Nevada were under water Sunday after torrential rains went through, causing rivers and streams to flood. In Reno alone 50 roads were closed due to high water levels, and all bridges over the Truckee River in Reno were also closed.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) spent the day evaluating the state's roads affected by floods and rain. Multiple state roads in the greater Truckee Meadows and Carson Valley areas remain closed, including those in the Sparks industrial area and areas of Reno, including East McCarran Boulevard and South Virginia Street.

With flood warnings up around Northern California and Western Nevada, Douglas County officials are alerting residents of a flood watch issued for the area from late Saturday night January 7 through Monday morning, January 9.

Douglas County to celebrate additions at Johnson Lane Park

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating the new additions at Johnson Lane Park and the public invited to a dedication of the facilities on December 1, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.

Construction on the new additions began over a year ago and was completed this Fall on new tennis and pickle ball courts, pavers, playground, pavilion and restroom building.

The park is located at 1476 Stephanie Way in Minden, Nev.

Five businesses cited for selling alcohol to minors in Douglas County

Five Douglas County businesses were recently cited for selling alcohol to minors.

On November 2, Douglas County Sheriff's Office visited 28 businesses with liquor licenses to determine if they were being compliant with state law and not selling to minors.

Wal-Mart North County, Maverick, World Market, Grocery Outlet and Lucky Discount Liquor all received citations for furnishing alcohol to people under the age of 21. The employees who sold the alcohol was also cited.

The following businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check.

Douglas County to hold public meetings to discuss stormwater issues

Douglas County is hosting a series of public outreach meetings to discuss stormwater issues specific to geographic areas in Douglas County and to explain how a stormwater management program and utility fee might work. A presentation will be given at each meeting and will include recommendations from the Citizen’s Flood Task Force, examples of how a stormwater management program could work, and staff will be collecting public input.

Man runs 65 miles to South Lake Tahoe to show support for law enforcement

It is dark. It is 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15 at the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) in Placerville. It is early, but not too early to prevent a group of people to come see Camino resident Hervé Leconte leave on his 65-mile run to the EDSO building in South Lake Tahoe.

Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead on Monday

There will be a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe to remember those who have died in service to our nation. The American Legion Post 795 is hosting the ceremony and has invited the public to attend both the remembrance and for refreshments at their hall afterwards.

Close to 600 flags will be placed at Happy Homestead Cemetery by the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Friday morning, and they'll remain throughout the holiday weekend. The cemetery is the final resting place to more than 560 veterans.

Carson Valley flooding update

Douglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the current flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County.

The State Damage Assessment Teams went out to the affected areas on Thursday to determine the amount of damage to public infrastructure as well as attempting to determine private property damage following state and FEMA damage assessment criteria. The County hopes to have this report completed as soon as possible.

Approximately 141 homes have water and structural damage after Wednesday's flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County. It is unknown how many homes may have landscape damage.

No injuries have been reported.

Flash floods in Douglas County; Sand bags available in South Lake Tahoe

Douglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the storms that are currently passing through Douglas County. Areas of concern are the flood prone areas of the Fish Springs, Johnson Lane, Foothill Road and Topaz Ranch Estates.

Current road closures at this time in Douglas County are East Valley Road near Eldon Way in the Johnson Lane area. Precautions should be taken when driving along roads that have steep embankments alongside such as SR207 Kingsbury Grade for falling rocks and debris.

Douglas County invites public to review Johnson Lane Park plans

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Commission invites the community to review the phased improvements planned for Johnson Lane Park located on Stephanie Way during its Commission meeting on April 7, 2015, 6:00 pm at Piñon Hills Elementary School.

The Parks & Recreation Commission will be reviewing a conceptual phased improvement plan for the Johnson Lane Park. The estimated construction budget for the improvements is $750,000 and will include the following:
• A new playground system
• A picnic pavilion
• A restroom remodel

Douglas County's 2014 floods didn't cause enough damage for assistance

Last summer's flash floods in Douglas County caused $927,205 in damage, far below the federal minimum of $3,753,710 needed in order to receive federal assistance.

While Douglas County Emergency Management had requested that due to the close timing of these events (July 20, July 30, Aug. 6 and Aug. 11) the state consider combining all damage under one event, FEMA regulations do not allow for combining damage costs of multiple events.

South Lake Tahoe bike parade sets sight on world record

The South Lake Tahoe Slow Rollers are asking the local community to help them attempt breaking the world record for people riding bikes in a single line, which is 917. During the first attempt two years ago there were plenty of cyclists, 1188, but many people rode two or more across and sometimes had gaps in the line so it was too hard for officials to certify the ride.

Douglas County assesses flood damage

Douglas County Board of Commissioners have requested a State of Emergency for the series of floods that have hit the region since July 20. In doing so, funds can come into the county to help replenish depleted coffers and to help with the repair of public infrastructure such as county maintained roads, culverts, and drainage.

South Lake Tahoe police look for man who attempted to rape woman New Year's Eve

South Lake Tahoe police are looking for a man who attacked and attempted to rape a 25-year-old woman on New Year's Eve after she accepted a ride from the suspect.

The man is described as white, about 25 years old, 5 foot, seven inches tall and about 150 pounds with a thin build. His hair was wavy brown, about 2 inches on the top and about 1-inch on the sides and had about a week’s worth of facial stubble.

The suspect was driving a pickup, described as an older model white Ford with a manual transmission and black cloth seats.

UPDATE 11:10AM: The Douglas County Emergency Management has implemented a precautionary action plan for this weekend’s weather event. The Management team met this morning and discussed the event thus far. The major event has been a downed tree on Centerville Road, but has since been removed.

Minden man dies in Pine Nut mountains ATV accident

A 19-year-old Minden man died Thursday after the ATV vehicle he was driving was struck head-on by a Ford F-150 truck. The accident happened just before 9:30 a.m. on Sunrise Pass Road near Juniper Valley behind the Johnson Lane subdivision in the Pinenut Mountains.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies say the dune buggy, driven by Daniel Palmer, was speeding west on a dirt road when it slid and drifted head on into the path of an oncoming older Ford F-150.

South Lake Tahoe authorities reopen Highway 50, evacuations lifted after bomb squad called

UPDATE 8:06PM: Scene is secured, according to South Lake Tahoe Police. Highway 50 reopened as is Safeway. Best Western customers who were evacuated now allowed to return to their rooms.

UPDATE 8PM: Areas near Takela Drive and Fairview on Highway 50 have been blocked off for vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic, passersbys have been told to leave the area, a hotel has reportedly been evacuated, and a bomb squad has been staged at Safeway on Johnson Boulevard, according to South Lake Tahoe Police via dispatch.
At around 6:45 p.m. a bomb squad reportedly responded and was told to stage its operation command center at the Safeway store on Johnson Lane. According to dispatch via scanner a hotel was evacuated, also around 6:45 p.m. It is unknown at this time why the bomb squad was called or what the situation is. However, reports are that authorities were going to use a fire hose to blast water at whatever has been deemed suspicious. It is unclear whether it is a package under scrutiny. As of 7:57PM Highway 50 was still blocked and traffic was diverted.

For those unfamiliar with them, they are the seeds of the Pinon Pine Tree, which is the official tree of the State of Nevada. The Pinon is a fairly short, bushy looking, rather unattractive, full-of-pitch tree and it is one of the main physical features of our Great Basin area.

Douglas authorities arrest man on abduction, attempted sexual assault charges on a child

Deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have arrested 21-year-old Jacob Wilcher on charges of kidnapping and attempted sexual assault. At approximately 11:40 am on Sunday, Douglas County deputies were dispatched to a call of an attempted child abduction at the Lifepoint Church, in Minden.
