Shawna Brekke-Read has been named the City of South Lake Tahoe's new Development Services Director. She is heading to the Sierra from the Bay Area where she has been the Town of Moraga's Planning Director for the last three years.
City Manager Nancy Kerry made the announcement Thursday. “I am very pleased to announce the selection of Shawna Brekke-Read to join the City’s organization leadership team. We are fortunate to recruit a professional of her caliber, experience and tenacity. I am confident Ms. Brekke-Read will serve the community and City Council well.”
Brekke-Read told the Lamorinda Weekly that the job in South Lake Tahoe will be "in-house building, planning, a redevelopment agency, code enforcement and housing, and economic development. It's taking planning and expanding it," she explained to the news agency.
Brekke-Read has 30 years of experience working with municipalities, the private sector and non-profits. While in Moraga, managed planning, building, transportation planning and economic development, directed a comprehensive sign ordinance, revised code enforcement regulations, and gained three successful grants.
Prior to that she operated her own planning consulting business for thirteen years, was a public schools advocate in Oakland, Administrative Director for the Oakland Heritage Alliance, Senior Planner for San Ramon, and Community Services Director for City of Susanville.
Her last day on the job in Moraga will be September 5 and she plans on beginning her South Lake Tahoe position by mid-September.
Shawna is married and has two sons. Her husband Don teaches middle school. According to the Lamorinda Daily, he will stay in Moraga to continue the successful French and Debate programs he developed. Their older son Nick is a helicopter mechanic in the United States Marine Corp based in Miramar, and their younger son Dillon is starting his sophomore year at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Shawna and her family like to travel, hike, and ski, and she looks forward to becoming a part of the South Lake Tahoe community.
