SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twice a year the community has a chance to fill a police cruiser with food for the Bread & Broth 4 Kids program that feeds children in South Lake Tahoe. The next Cram-a-Cruiser is set for Saturday, September 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Grocery Outlet on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
During the school year, volunteers fill backpacks of food every weekend for almost 200 local school children. This food helps feed them over the weekend where the free breakfast and lunch programs at school aren't able to help.
Over 57 percent of students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District qualify for the free and reduced-cost meals while in school. Bread & Broth 4 Kids weekend backpacks served 180 kids each week. During their summer program over 200 kids were served every Wednesday.
Please stop by Grocery Outlet on September 21st to donate food from their wish list or help us with a monetary donation so they can purchase the food. The all-volunteer program is run 100 percent by donations.
The wish list: canned soup, ravioli, spaghetti, chili, tuna/chicken (5 oz.), beef jerky, mac & cheese (small instant cups), instant oatmeal in packets, mini-boxes of cereal, granola bars, fruit snacks, ramen, cup o’ noodles, fruit/applesauce cups, raisins (1oz.), nuts, crackers with cheese or peanut butter. All in single-serving packages, please. Or peanut butter, jelly both in plastic containers, or 11oz. boxes of cereal for longer holiday vacations. Each week the kids get three dinners, two lunches, two breakfasts and four snacks.
With an anticipated 180 backpacks a week again during the 2019-20 school year, that is 540 dinners, 360 lunches and breakfasts, and 720 snacks weekly!
