Nevada Guard to commemorate IHOP victims in 5k run/walk

CARSON CITY — It has been seven years since shots rang out at the Carson City International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurant, leaving four people dead and thrusting the capital city into tragedy still felt today. Of the four people killed, three were National Guard members and the fourth was a South Lake Tahoe resident.

The Nevada Guard is set to host a memorial run and walk this Thursday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims. It will start at the Carson City IHOP located at 3883 S. Carson St. at 7:00 a.m. Dozens of soldiers and airmen will traverse the 5-kilometer route from the restaurant to the Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Drive in Carson City.

Everyone is invited to join the guardsmen in the free, non-competitive run or walk (The event is untimed, and no prizes will be awarded).

Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31 and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, were all killed during the shooting. All three of the soldiers worked at the Office of the Adjutant General on Fairview Drive in Carson City.

McElhiney's father, Retired Major Kenny Curtzwiler of Meyers, along with her daughter, Lily Hansen, will be participating in the run.
