County Supervisors spend day in South Lake Tahoe

To get a look at the properties the County owns, and to get a look at services and programs going on in South Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) met on the South Shore last week for tours and discussions.

The County owned properties in SLT were highlighted during a morning tour. Each of the properties, the Senior Center, the Museum, the Art League building and the Visitor's Authority building, are owned by the County and maintained by the City.

The BOS have been in discussions with the City over what is the best use for the County facilities and who should have outright ownership over the area.

"We are continuing with those discussions," said County Supervisor Sue Novasel who represents the South Shore. "Just this week, the City and County agreed to continue discussions concerning the senior center via the 2 by 2 meetings."

The 2 x 2 meetings are held by two members of the BOS and two members of the SLT City Council, along with management team members, to discuss topics of interest to both groups.

"It is my hope that these discussions will lead to a solution over concerns that have been voiced by our seniors and the community," said Novasel.

After their morning tour, they visited the Juvenile Treatment Center located behind the jail and then moved onto South Tahoe High School where they had lunch cooked and served by some inmates by the El Dorado County Jail. The culinary arts program at the jail has created an award-winning catering group named, "So Good It's A Crime."

Their afternoon was filled with presentations and a tour of the high school.

"I want to thank all the volunteers, city staff, LTUSD Superintendent Jim Tarwater and his staff, along with Chief Probation Officer Brian Richart and our county Juvenile Treatment Center's staff for such a wonderful day of activities and informational tours in South Lake Tahoe," said Novasel.

A vote on real estate transactions between the City and the County is expected after the election in November.
