South Lake Tahoe Highway 50 roadwork update

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Roadwork on a three-year $57 million project along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe is coming to an end. Until November 1, crews will be working on some curb and gutter portions of the road along with some sidewalk repair. They will also be working on electrical components, landscaping, erosion control and painting of lines.

This week, crews removed the top “lift” of the section from the Upper Truckee River to Winnemucca Avenue. The faulty lift was on the final layer of the road paved in 2018 and the mainline paving is being finished Tuesday, at the TRPA October 15 deadline.

The lights will be synchronized from the Y and Sierra Boulevard when the project area is winterized in 2019.

This is the last Caltrans road project in the City for a while. They have been working around the California side of the lake since 2007.

"We are getting out of your way by Spring," Caltrans Spokesman Steve Nelson told the SLT City Council Tuesday.

The project will collect and treat stormwater runoff as part of the Lake Tahoe
Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). It will also widen the roadway to provide 6-foot shoulders for bike lanes, replace traffic signals, replace curb, gutter and sidewalks, and improve pavement cross slope. Caltrans is working with the City of South Lake Tahoe to incorporate improvements at Sierra Boulevard (signal and left turn lane).

In 2020, Highway 50 over Echo Summit will close to complete a $14.1 million project which is replacing the aging Echo Summit Bridge. They have to work on it prior to June 15 or after Labor Day, depending on the contractor's decision. It will close up to two weeks. The contractor has broken down a schedule in 15-minute increments and shooting for 9-10 days. There is an economic incentive for fewer than 14 days.

The bypass lane at the roundabout in Meyers at the intersection of SR89 and US50 opened Tuesday.

There is an upcoming Highway 50 corridor lighting project coming back in two years.
