Deadline approaching for Celebrity Golf donations

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will be accepting applications from local nonprofits for distributions of $55,600 until Monday, October 26, 2015.

The money comes from the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe in July.

The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $51,500 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship. Tournament sponsors will offer a total of $107,100 to local non-profits, agencies and schools this year.

For funding consideration groups must meet 501(c)3 certified non-profit guidelines, provide an outline of their mission, describe how the donation will be used, and indicate impact in the community. The application is available at www.ltva.org and must be received by noon on Monday, Oct. 26.

Recipients will be contacted by Monday, Nov. 9 with checks presented at the LTVA Board of Directors meeting, Thursday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.

Since 2009, donations exceeding $800,000 have been distributed to more than 80 local non-profits to assist 10,500+ individuals. In 2014, local cancer support programs through the Barton Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Cancer League received $13,000. In all, 22 Lake Tahoe area non-profits received donations from ACC last year.

Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated over $4.5 million to local and national non-profits. The nation’s longest running celebrity golf tournament captured the media spotlight with first-timer Justin Timberlake joining the field of famed sports stars, legends and celebrity competitors including returning fan favorites Charles Barkley, John Elway and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, plus Larry the Cable Guy, Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty and 15 Hall of Famers representing major sports.
