Whittell High School graduation procession along Highway 50 Friday

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Class of 2020 at George Whittell High School will hold its graduation on Friday, June 19. Since only immediate family members can attend the socially distancing graduation ceremony there will be a parade starting at Kahle Park on Kingsbury Grade at 10:00 a.m. The procession of cars will go along Highway 50 and end up at the Warrior Way high school in Zephyr Cove. Those wanting to cheer the graduates on may do so from along the four-mile route.

Barton Foundation to give away $100,000 in local grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Barton Foundation began accepting applications on June 15 from local nonprofit organizations for this year’s $100,000 Community Health Grant program. Area service groups and organizations that share Barton Health’s commitment to improving community health and well-being are encouraged to apply online at bartonhealth.org/foundation.

Applications will be accepted through June 30, 2020.

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship awarded to local nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Thursday was money giveaway day at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) meeting at Stateline. Thirty-eight local nonprofits were given checks totaling $100,000, a result of funds raised during the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood.

Barton Foundation awards $50,000 to groups focused on community's health needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifteen local health programs offered by nonprofits and agencies in the South Lake Tahoe area have been awarded grants by the Barton Foundation. A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.

During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship to be given to local nonprofits

STATELINE, Nev. - The 30th annual American Century Championship has gone into the record books as one of the biggest and best golf events in Lake Tahoe history. There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

American Century and LTVA award almost $79k to South Shore nonprofits

Twenty-six local nonprofits were awarded $78,974 Thursday in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship thanks to funds raised during the 2018 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

“The continued support from our partners American Century Investments and NBC Sports means so much to this community,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “These contributions benefit so many in the South Shore a long time after the tournament ends.”

LTVA to distribute almost $79K to local nonprofits; Applications accepted until Oct. 15

STATELINE, Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) will distribute $78,974 raised during the 29th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament to local non-profits.

Organizations interested in applying for this funding can find an application at: https://ltva.org/american-century-championship-donation-request-application/. The deadline to submit is Monday, October 15.

South Tahoe High Booster Club holding shredding fundraiser

Have boxes of paperwork you need shredded now that tax season is drawing to a close? The South Tahoe High Booster Club can take care of that for you on Friday, April 20 from noon to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the American Legion on Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The cost is $10 per legal size box.

They are also looking for volunteers and boxes, so stop by if you can help.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship

American Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.

On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

Lake Tahoe non-profits invited to apply for $51,000 in grants from American Century Golf

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority has opened the 2017 American Century Championship grant period, encouraging South Lake Tahoe non-profits to apply for a portion of $51,000 to be given to the community.

Prevent identity theft and get your documents shredded at the South Tahoe High Booster Club's fundraiser on Friday, May 19 at the American Legion Parking Lot from noon to 4:00 p.m.

For just $10 a box, your documents will be securely shredded. Plus, your donation is tax deductible!

The Booster Club gave the $20,000 earned at the last year's golf tournament back to the students through grants for 20 sports teams. Those funds went to tournament entry fees, uniforms, equipment and much more.

LTUSD has WASC plans and updates for South Tahoe High on website

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) didn't give South Tahoe High and the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) the results expected after a WASC accreditation team visited South Lake Tahoe in the Spring of 2016.

Instead of an expected six-year term they received a two-year accreditation which goes through June of 2018. On March 19 and 20 of that year a team of educators will return to the campus and evaluate recommended changes.

LTUSD accepts South Tahoe High Principal's resignation, search begins for replacement

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board formally accepted the resignation of Chad Houck, the principal of South Tahoe High during their Tuesday night meeting, though word of the upcoming change in leadership had been circulating for weeks.

"Chad will be seeking other opportunities," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater.

The popular principal has received a lot of support from parents, the community and staff.

Public invited to Open House at South Tahoe High for new teen resource room

The community is invited to an Open House at the new Teen Resource Room at South Tahoe High on Wednesday, November 16 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in room C-1 at the school which is located at 1735 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.

Students use the room to get needed clothing including hats and coats, school supplies and food, as well as bicycles. Counseling services are also offered in the room.

American Century Golf hands out over $50,000 to local nonprofits

It's been four months since the 27th annual celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe, but area nonprofits continue to reap financial rewards from the tournament sponsor, American Century.

LTVA to award over $50,000 in grants from Celebrity Golf funds to local non-profits

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments had over $110,000 to give out to South Lake Tahoe area groups, schools and non-profits after the end of the 2016 tournament.

They previously awarded $62,000 and is now looking for non-profits to get the remaining $51,984.

Applications from local nonprofits are now being accepted through Oct. 24 by LTVA for the grants.

Coral Lathrop named LTUSD Bus Driver of the Year

"Nerves of steel, patience of a saint," is how Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Transportation Supervisor Christy Blach described the bus drivers entrusted with carrying the community's children around in the big yellow school buses.

On Tuesday evening, LTUSD honored driver Coral Lathrop with their Bus Driver of the Year award. Lathrop has been driving full time since 2014, and is a favorite amount parents, kids and fellow drivers.

Women of the Moose in SLT help local homeless youth

A community group effort led by the Women of the Moose (WOTM) Chapter 408 in South Lake Tahoe is helping the homeless youth of the community

WOTM help out with the kids who are part of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's McKinney Vento program. LTUSD receives an annual allocation of about $1,000 to purchase school supplies and help with bus transportation for its approximately 250 homeless students.

29th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament

For almost 30 years, Edgewood Tahoe has hosted a golf tournament to help raise funds for local schools, and plans have now been unveiled for the 29th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament. The first day of this popular event has already sold out, so now is the time to sign up for the May 8 tournament.

This fun filled event includes a chance to win trophies, raffle prizes and a closest to the pin contest, and a hole in one prize.

Soroptimists hand out donations to South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Members of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) handed out checks to 22 different project that are created by non-profits to serve the women and children of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

Mobile dental care team treating dozens of students at South Tahoe High

The classroom used to teach students a career in dental assisting at South Tahoe High was turned into an actual dental clinic this week with the presence of a mobile team from Southern Califonia to perform much needed services on those without dental insurance.

Dr. Azeem Qureshi, DDS, Hygienist Isabel Uribe and Dental Assistant Nancy Pineda saw 14 students on Wednesday, and are expected to see another 25 on Thursday.

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Thirty South Lake Tahoe non-profits were given a share of $55,600 on Thursday, bringing the total the American Century Golf Championships have donated to the community this year to $107,100.

Deadline approaching for Celebrity Golf donations

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will be accepting applications from local nonprofits for distributions of $55,600 until Monday, October 26, 2015.

The money comes from the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe in July.

South Tahoe High Interact Club held clothing drive for classmates

The newly formed Interact Club of South Lake Tahoe just finished up their first community service project of the school year, a clothing drive. Knowing that some of their classmates may not have the clothing needed to keep warm during winter, the students started a clothing drive.

The clothing will be kept in a room managed by the South Tahoe High Booster Club that will also have non-perishable food items to distribute to students in need. Twice a week that room will be open to students to visit and get needed food and clothing. Those dates will be announced at a later date.

The South Tahoe High Booster Club would like to thank the restaurants who donated fabulous food for our teacher's Welcome Back to School luncheon.

Over 70 people enjoyed food donated by Getaway Cafe, MacDuffs Pub, Riva Grill, My Thai Cuisine and Samurai for the spread they put on.

The teachers are still talking about the great food!

28th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood this weekend

A few spots are still available for rounds of golf on Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe during the 28th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament. The joint event presented by the Whittell High School and South Tahoe High School booster clubs raises funds for sports at both South Shore schools.

The fun-filled event includes chances to win trophies and $100 for closest-to-the-pin. Each day is an individual tournament with a scramble format. Couples, individuals and foursomes are invited to play. There will be trophies awarded to the top three teams each day.

Waterless Car Wash at Cardinale Way Saturday to help South Tahoe High students

The drought in California has created regulations that are having all homes and businesses reduce water usage by 25%. The South Tahoe Yearbook staff had planned Saturday's carwash before the Governor's message, and instead of canceling they have created a new event: A Waterless Carwash!

STHS and Cardinale Way saw an opportunity to not only help spread the message to reduce water usage, but also to lead by example.

Celebrity Golf Tournament gives over $115,000 to local causes and charities

South Lake Tahoe non-profits were awarded $48,000 during the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board meeting today. The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. The LTVA, in partnership with NBC Sports and American Century Investments, previously directed an additional $67,200 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during tournament week to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe Booster Club, Boys and Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship

South Lake Tahoe Business EXPO on Friday

A record-breaking 100 businesses will participate in the 2014 Business EXPO –“Tahoe South in ACTION” this Friday, March 28. The event begins at 4:30pm and continues until 8:30pm in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Convention Center. It will highlight South Shore businesses’ goods and services to an anticipated crowd of 1,200 attendees.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

Intercollegiate soccer launched at Lake Tahoe Community College

It’s official: men’s and women’s intercollegiate soccer is coming to Lake Tahoe Community College.

The LTCC Board of Trustees voted in favor of launching the soccer program at its last meeting on June 25. LTCC’s Physical Education Department is developing the curriculum surrounding the program, and a decision on a new team name and mascot will soon follow.

Job announcements for the related coaching positions will be released in August, with hiring decisions finalized by October. The new men’s and women’s soccer teams will take the field competitively starting in September 2014.

Tahoe Douglas Fire District uses insurance bonus money to reward local nonprofits

Five Douglas County, Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada area non-profit organizations are the recipients of Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District employee insurance money designed to benefit community groups.
The money directed to the nonprofit groups comes from the fire district's health insurance plan operated through consultant LBG Advisors.

Carson High Booster Club receives a “boost” from the Carson Nugget

Carson City, NV—Carson High School football players will receive new helmets, shoulder pads and other equipment this year thanks to the generosity shown during the annual “Kick-Off Dinner” recently held at Carson Nugget.

At the start of each season, the Carson High Athletic Department and the Carson High Football Boosters raise money to support the program. This year the Carson Nugget provided the venue and split the revenue generated through the sale of alcohol to help the group generate income.
