SLTPD aiding in investigation of man involved in twenty-hour standoff in Cameron Park

A heavily armed 37-year-old man was shot early Friday morning after keeping law enforcement personnel at bay for twenty hours in Cameron Park.

A 911 call about a possible domestic violence situation in an apartment on La Canada Drive was received by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office dispatch at 6:10 a.m. on Thursday, November 17. According to the reporting party, there was an armed man holding a woman and her baby against their will inside the apartment.

Shortly after deputies arrived they were able to make contact with the suspect, Dylan Robert Johnson. He released the woman and baby but refused to surrender, and indicated he was heavily armed.

Crisis negotiators and the SWAT team were called and the surrounding apartments were evacuated.

After several hours of extensive negotiations, Johnson fired one of the weapons inside the apartment and officers responded by firing tear gas into the residence. Johnson still refused to surrender and began shooting weapons off well into the evening.

Folsom Police Department and their SWAT team were called into assist due to the length of the standoff.

At 2:10 a.m. Friday morning, Johnson moved to an open doorway and began firing directly at SWAT personnel and SWAT vehicles at the scene. Due to the immediate threat to the public and to the officer’s safety, a SWAT officer shot and wounded Johnson. SWAT Teams moved in and took Johnson into custody and immediately began treating him for his injuries. Johnson was transported to a local trauma center for further treatment. His condition is unknown at this time and he does not show up on jail logs in El Dorado County.

Because it was an officer involved shooting, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Critical Incident Protocol was also immediately activated. A multi-agency team of investigators from the Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Placerville PD, South Lake Tahoe PD, and the District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation into this incident.

The investigation is currently underway and due to the extensive crime scene, there are still some evacuations in place and some road closures in place.

As is common procedure, the officer(s) directly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave and at this time will not be identified.
