Father in custody after four-year-old boy ingests meth

A 4-year-old Carson City boy was hospitalized Friday night after ingesting methamphetamine that allegedly belonged to the boy's father who is now custody on suspicion of child endangerment, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Taken into custody was Pedro Montanez, 27, on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of trafficking levels of a controlled substance.

At around 5:45 p.m. Friday, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was called to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center regarding a reported child abuse. At arrival, officers learned the 4-year-old had been brought into the emergency room late in the afternoon, suffering from hallucinations and presumably mentally ill, said Furlong.

A routine toxicology screen had disclosed the child was actively high on methamphetamine and suffering from the effects. The child had been taken from the hospital by his parents who were believed to be transporting the young boy to a Reno area hospital.

Deputies and Carson City Special Enforcement Team members responded to the home of the child in the 1900 block of Molly Drive in North Carson City. Both parents and the child were home. The boy is an only child. During cooperative interviews and a search of the residence, approximately 1 once of methamphetamine was recovered.

A criminal history inquiry disclosed Montanez had previously been deported from the United States. Montanez and the child’s mother are not married.

The mother was not taken into custody at this time, and both the mother and father continue to cooperate with investigators, said Furlong.

Although the child remains under medical care, Child Protective Services has taken custody of him and is implementing a “safety plan,” said Furlong.

As this matter is actively under investigation at this time, no booking documents or photograph’s are presently available.
