South Tahoe High sends out anti-bullying message through assembly and video

"This was the best school assembly ever," said a South Tahoe High Junior after hearing youth motivational speaker Mike Smith on campus Wednesday. "His message was amazing."

Smith spoke of how the words that you say can leave a mark on someone’s life forever. And if you’re a bully, that mark is a scar.

He doesn't look like your typical motivational speaker with his long hair, tattoos and youthful appearance. Smith shared with the kids his story of being a bully as well as, how in high school, he decided that being ordinary was a choice. Since then he has never stopped believing that he can do whatever he puts his mind to, and now shares that message with kids.

Smith is planning to skateboard across the country next summer. He's started two non-profits and mentors young people. The STHS students appreciated hearing his story and how they can create their own story. When he speaks he likes to share the present and not the past.

One student posted on Instagram following the presentation: "Thank you so much today @mikesmithlive you were very inspirational and changed a lot of lives for the better!!! You have made a huge difference in our high school and high schools around the world. Thank you so much!"

The feeling seemed mutual as Smith posted a massive selfie with the STHS student body behind him. "South Tahoe HS has one of the most progressive campuses I've ever seen. These kids can and will be game changers. I loved my time. Thanks for letting me crash your school today. I believe in you guys so much!"

As they work on creating a more positive school environment, South Tahoe High's counseling staff is producing a series of anti-bullying videos. Posted here is the first edition and matched Smith's message to the students.
