EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - It was a historic turnout for a midterm election across El Dorado County, and now the results have been finalized for the November 6, 2018 election.
The final report was released at 2:36 p.m.
The most watched issued for South Lake Tahoe voters was Measure T, the citizen generated measure to ban vacation home rentals from residential neighborhoods starting in 2021.
3459 voters voted against on the measure, 3517 voted for it, a difference of 58. Out of those who voted on the whole ballot, 148 voters didn't vote either way (or voted both yes and no) on Measure T.
There was little to no change since the second to last voting results were released - http://southtahoenow.com/story/11/30/2018/measure-ban-vacation-rentals-south-lake-tahoe-way-passing.
For the whole county, 74.86 percent of registered voters turned out at the polls. In South Lake Tahoe, 65 percent, both are record numbers for a mid-term. With several national and local issues attracting more voters, their numbers were reflected at the final tabulation.
There are hundreds of pages of reports that now need to be created to go to the State of California by the end of the week.
South Lake Tahoe has always had one of the lower percentages of election turnouts than the rest of the County, and this year was no different.
Why this is could be the topic of future discussions. It could be due to the transient nature of the area and people leave the state without notifying the elections department that they have left. If they move within California their registration would be moved to their new location, but not if out of the state. A written letter would have to go to the El Dorado County Elections, notifying them in writing that they are no longer in South Lake Tahoe.
There will be a spring election, perhaps as early as March 2019, to determine who will hold Senator Ted Gaines's seat. He won the election for the State Board of Equalization, thus opening his congressional seat. That election could possibly see a 20 percent turnout, which is the norm.
