Over 24,000 ballots yet to be counted in El Dorado County

With a narrow margin in the ballot measure concerning the future of vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe, and other races still close, everyone is awaiting the release of more results from Tuesday's election.

You'll still have to wait a bit longer.

On Friday, November 9, El Dorado County Elections will post the next round of results, but it won't be the last as there are over 24,000 ballots yet to count.

13,372 mail-in ballots were dropped off at the polls
2,614 provisional ballots
8,365 conditional ballots, those dropped off in drops boxes in South Lake Tahoe and Placerville and received in the mail Tuesday

Plus, it is unknown how many ballots were postmarked on Tuesday but haven't been received in the mail.

Ballots received by mail have a long process to follow according to Linda Webster, the assistant registrar of voters for the County. Every signature has to be checked and a ballot reviewed for extra marks and writing. Those that are written on must be duplicated by hand. Webster says people will write comments on the ballot, many of the derogatory nature. Those are pulled, rewritten and documented with the original received.

If you're a numbers person you may be able to figure out statistically how many of those 24,000 ballots could be from South Lake Tahoe.

There are 121,192 registered voters in El Dorado County. 20,896 of those are in the Area 5 supervisorial district, and 10,959 of those are in the City of South Lake Tahoe boundaries (so 9937 in Tahoma, Meyers, Pollock Pines and other non-city areas). That means 100,296 people in areas outside of Area 5 and South Lake Tahoe could have voted.

So far, 47.2 percent of those registered in Area 5 have had their votes counted, or 9,869 residents.
42.7 percent of those registered in the city limits, or 4,684 residents, have had ballots counted.

County-wide, 53.49 percent of registered voters have had their choices recorded, or 64,824 people.

So, if ten percent of those ballots are from those in South Lake Tahoe there could still be 2,400 uncounted votes. How many of those are for Yes or No on T? That remains unknown.

These late counts changed the outcome of the 2012 SLT City Council election when Austin Sass overtook Angela Swanson at the end.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been an election season unlike many others with perhaps a record turnout expected for a gubernatorial election in California.

At the local level, nine candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council, two vying for the El Dorado County Board of Supervisor seat for Area 5, and contentious ballot measures have flooded election offices with completed ballots.

After the polls closed at 8:00 p.m., the first count of mail-in ballots received have been released and with just over 26 percent of the vote counted:
