Three arrested over weekend for alleged crimes in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had a busy weekend with the arrest of three people in two separate investigations.

In an incident Sunday, at 11:56 a.m. officers responded to a report of suspicious people going in and out of a South Lake Tahoe home. A neighbor called the homeowners who live out of the area and found that nobody was permitted to be at the home, which is not a vacation home rental. Upon arrival officers saw a window smashed out in order for someone to reach the front door latch. They announced themselves, calling out to anyone who might be in the home. Officers said nobody responded but they could hear people fleeing upstairs.

A woman, identified as Samantha Vogel came downstairs and was cooperative and detained. A male, Logan Schwartz, was also found in the home but was not cooperative, according to police.

The pair, both from South Lake Tahoe, showed officers an old rental agreement from 2018, insisting they lived in the home. The names on the rental agreement did not match Vogel and Schwartz and the homeowner confirmed no one had permission to be inside.

Both were arrested. A third person allegedly stole a high end motorcycle from the garage, and he is still being investigated. The stolen bike is a Honda CBR 929.

Vogel, 31, was booked in the El Dorado County Jail on charges of First Degree Burglary. Her bail has been set at $50,000 and as of Monday she was still in the jail.

Schwartz, 32, was booked in El Dorado County Jail on charges of First Degree Burglary but an enhancement of $1,060,000 has been added to the original $50,000 bail. He too is still housed in the jail as of Monday.

Numerous entry points were damaged before gaining access to the home, police said.

In the other incident, on Saturday an investigation by SLTPD officers led to the arrest of a South Lake Tahoe man for allegedly burglarizing vehicles in the west side of town along Venice Drive, Dedi Lane, and in the Tahoe Sierra neighborhood which took place Friday, December 11.

A surveillance camera caught a partial license plate of the person(s) responsible. The suspect's car made a turn in front of an officer on patrol. The officer made a vehicle stop and the suspect allowed the officer into his car.

Officers recovered stolen property from at least six identified victims. A stolen credit card was used at a local "head" shop which was caught on camera.

The only person arrested at this time is 37-year-old Nicholas Overfield. He is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on $60,000 bail for charges of Receiving Known Stolen Property, Get Credit of Others, and a bail enhancement.

SLTPD reminded residents to use this case as an example to lock vehicles and don't leave valuables inside.
