Three arrested over weekend for alleged crimes in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had a busy weekend with the arrest of three people in two separate investigations.

Over 8,100 pounds of trash removed from Donner and Tahoe by Clean Up The Lake dive teams

Clean Up the Lake dive teams have removed 8,183 pounds of trash from Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe, most from the summer of 2020.

The team completed a circumnavigation of Donner Lake, covering every inch of eight-mile shoreline at depths up to 25 feet. They removed all they could find in that area, resulting in 5151.5 pounds. They removed 3,032 pounds of trash from the depths of Lake Tahoe.

Investigation leads to return of custom bar top to brewery in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Finding a truck with stolen license plates on Tuesday has led to the recovery of a custom made bar top from a South Lake Tahoe brewery.

On June 30, 2020, deputies from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) got an LPR (License Plate Reader) hit on a truck in Meyers.

The truck was traveling west on US50 and deputies found the truck near Ice House Road and attempted a traffic stop. The driver turned onto a rocky dirt road, stopped by the American River and took off on foot.

Missing retired fire battalion chief reunited with family

11:25 p.m. Update: Merlin Turner was found Thursday and has been reunited with his family. According to Fox40 in Sacramento, a family friend said between the stress brought on by COVID-19 and his battle with post-traumatic stress disorder, Turner needed some respite.

Social media was instrumental in finding Turner. Someone reported seeing him in Knights Landing and another person saw him eating a burger at their diner. The family friend says Turner didn’t even realize how many days had gone by or that he was on the news being reported as missing.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested after leading police on pursuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 26-year-old man was arrested Thursday night after allegedly leading officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on a pursuit through the Ski Run neighborhood.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., an SLTPD sergeant noticed the driver of a small motorcycle fail to stop at a stop sign at Spruce Avenue and Ski Run Boulevard. The motorcycle was also without a license plate attached, according to reports.

Vehicle reported stolen in Placerville leads to arrests made in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Thursday, February 20, an officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on routine patrol located a vehicle that was believed to be part of a crime in the Placerville area.

At 8:00 a.m. two days prior, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to a call near Placerville about an alleged carjacking. The victim knew the suspects and had been riding in the vehicle with them at the time of the incident. They had just driven from South Lake Tahoe to the Placerville area where the crime occurred, EDSO said.

One arrested after high-speed pursuit from South Lake Tahoe to Placerville

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A high-speed pursuit from South Lake Tahoe to Placerville, at times reaching 100 mph, has landed one man in jail.

A detective from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) happened to be in the parking lot of The Crossing Thursday afternoon when he observed what looked to be a theft in progress at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store.

Cycling icon Levi Leipheimer partners with “My Tahoe” license plate campaign

Professional cycling legend Levi Leipheimer was in Lake Tahoe recently to promote the Lake Tahoe specialty vehicle license program of the California Tahoe Conservancy.

Leipheimer, a two-time U.S. national champion, Olympic medalist, and three-time Tour of California winner, has continued to use his role in cycling to advance good causes, including through his King Ridge Foundation, which supports programs serving at-risk youth across the country.

New website shows visitors and locals over 40 public beaches in the Tahoe Basin

A new website has been launched by the Tahoe Fund that will guide both locals and visitors to over 40 beaches around Lake Tahoe. Along the iconic shores of the lake are hidden gems along with popular spots, all providing people a chance to experience the beach and shoreline activities.

The website offers information about how to get to each beach, where to park, hours of operation, what amenities and services are offered, if any, along with other helpful information beachgoers might be interested in.

Coroner says El Dorado County woman's death a homicide

The death of the 60-year-old grandmother whose body was found by her son on December 18 has been deemed a homicide as a result of blunt force trauma.

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) arrived at the home of Helen Hoover McKinney at approximately 8:00 p.m. Once inside they found the victim inside the residence in the town of El Dorado.

Investigators have determined there was no forced entry to the home and the victim's 2017 Nissan 370Z was missing. McKinney's last known contact with family or
friends was on November 29.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 40 years, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has been serving the South Lake Tahoe Community, and on Saturday, August 4 they are holding their annual Open House and opening up their doors to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This is the one time a year the general public can walk the grounds where wild birds and animals are being rehabilitated prior to their release back into the wild.

New issue of Tahoe In Depth now available

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has published the summer 2018 edition of Tahoe In Depth. The award-winning newspaper, in its sixth year of publication, strives to provide residents, visitors, and policymakers with information about protecting, enjoying, and exploring the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The summer 2018 edition includes a special report on 10 years of fighting aquatic invasive species at Lake Tahoe, as well as the 10th anniversary of the watercraft inspection program that has successfully prevented any new introductions of aquatic invasive species over the last decade.

Conservancy approves funding for ED raise and several projects

During this week's California Tahoe Conservancy board meeting, funds were not only approved for the Greenway shared use trail in South Lake Tahoe, but also for grants to be used on the lake, a forest health project and a 10 percent raise for Executive Director Patrick Wright.

Meyers traffic plan has some success after first weekend

If you drive through Meyers on a Sunday you've most likely come across gridlock traffic through the neighborhoods as vehicles trying to head west after their South Lake Tahoe weekend look for the quickest route, courtesy of smart phone apps.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel held a Town Hall meeting on February 28, providing a forum for residents, law enforcement and staff to discuss solutions. One suggestion that came out of that meeting was put into place on Sunday, March 4 and was fairly successful.

Fans don't let fans drive drunk

Law enforcement from both California and Nevada are reminding motorists to not drink and drive, especially during Super Bowl weekend which seen an increase of drunk drivers on the road. As friends and family gather to watch the game Sunday, February 4, please designate a sober driver before the game between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles begins.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) have teamed up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to remind motorists to not drive while intoxicated.

Carson City AAA office to handle DMV services for both CA and NV

Those dreading the day they have to wait in lines at the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) now have another option to get paperwork processed.

Starting December 4, 2017, the American Automobile Association (AAA) office in Carson City will take over-the-counter transactions for both the Nevada and California DMV.

Nevada transactions are available to both members of AAA and non-members. The California services in Carson City will be limited to members-only with the exception of Dealer services.

LAKE TAHOE – Ski season is almost here, and with it returns the popular “Plates for Powder” program. Individuals who purchase a new Lake Tahoe license plate in either California or Nevada can receive free lift tickets to one of eight Lake Tahoe resorts participating in the program. With snow heading to the mountains soon, now is the time to buy a Tahoe license plate so you can ski for free in Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Police investigating shots fired near Stateline

9:15AM Update - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has contacted two men who are considered "investigative leads" at this point. As of this time no arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.

Witnesses reported that two Hispanic males in their 20’s with short dark colored hair were the occupants in the vehicle.

The gun used in the event appear to be a semi-automatic handgun.

Use of counterfeit bills on the rise in El Dorado County

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is reporting a significant increase in the amount of counterfeit currency being passed along the Highway 50 corridor. The bills found to be fake have consisted mainly of $20 and $100 dollar bills.

The suspects have passed the bills at El Dorado County businesses in exchange for products or in the purchase of gift cards.

According to EDSO Sgt. Tasha Thompson, Safeway stores in particular seem to be targeted, and use of the fake bills at self-checkout stations has been a common occurrence.

Public's hep sought in Incline Village burglary/credit card fraud case

Two suspects are wanted in connection to an ongoing case investigation of a residential burglary that occurred in Incline Village, Nevada back on April 27. 2017.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the pair described as a six-foot tall male, 190-210 pounds with short, buzzed dark hair and a goatee, and an adult female, approximately five-and-a-half feet tall, 180-200 pounds with dark hair reaching to mid-back.

Open House at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Once a year the public has the opportunity to explore the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care facility. On Sunday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they will open their doors to where the wild birds and animals are rehabilitated.

For 40 years the non-profit has been serving wildlife in the Sierra and normally the only people allowed past the front door are the volunteers.

California Tahoe Conservancy gives over $400k to West Shore forest health

LAKE TAHOE - The California Tahoe Conservancy Board today authorized $414,074 to the California Department of Parks and Recreation for projects that improve forest health and reduce the risk of wildfire at Tahoe State Recreation Area and Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. The funding is the first allocation of more than $6.8 million in Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act funds awarded to the Conservancy at last year’s Presidential Summit.

Woman dead, child stabbed in El Dorado County; Search on for suspect

6/14 update 4:00 p.m. - The victim from yesterday’s homicide has been identified as 49-year-old Silvia Castillo of Placerville. The four year old girl who was stabbed multiple times had emergency surgery and is expected to survive.

Auto thefts and burglaries continue to target South Lake Tahoe residents

There has been a rash of suspicious circumstances in the Gardner Mountain area over the last week, ones that remind residents to lock their cars to prevent petty theft and other crimes of opportunity.

On March 19 between 4:04 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., 10 calls went into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department about suspicious activity on Gardner Street, Clement Street, Julie Lane, Tata Lane and Sand Harbor Road. In each incident, dome lights were on several cars as if some person(s) attempted to open them. In one incident the truck's doors were open and a stereo was stolen.

Lake Tahoe license plate program trying new ideas to spur sales

The Lake Tahoe license plate has been around for 25 years in California, one of 12 special interest plates people can choose from when registering their vehicles.

Funds collected from sales are allocated to the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) who is required to support “preservation and restoration projects in the Lake Tahoe area” and for “establishing and improving trails, pathways, and public access for nonmotorized traffic.”

Auto burglaries on rise in South Lake Tahoe; Two car thefts in one day

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning residents and visitors to take extra precaution in protecting their valuables as nine thefts from vehicles occurred between February 20-25, and two cars were stolen on February 24.

Six of the auto burglaries were in the Tahoe Island area and most of the cars involved in the City were left unlocked by their owners.

The first stolen car was a 2010 Silver Nissan Altima with Illinois license plate Z495853. It was stolen from the 1100 block of Herbert Avenue but has since been recovered.

Snow-covered body of Homewood man found outside his residence

Placer County Sheriff deputies found the snow-covered body of 49-year-old Todd Michael Borchardt of Homewood outside of his home Tuesday morning.

The deputies responded to the PDQ Market in Tahoma at 11:00 a.m. January 24 for the report of an abandoned vehicle which they found covered in snow, and no apparent tracks around it. They ran the car's license plate and found it belonged to a Homewood resident.

Carson City teens may be in South Lake Tahoe, last seen near local motel

9/12/6 update: All four teenage girls who were reported as runaways last week have now returned home, the Carson City Sheriff's Office investigators said today.

Two sisters, 15 and 16, who were listed as runaways and not seen since Sept. 2, have turned themselves over to juvenile officers. A 14-year-old had returned to her residence on Thursday and a 16-year-old was located Wednesday.

$5 after 5: Reduced evening parking rates at Heavenly Village garage

Starting Memorial Day Weekend, there is a new parking rate of $5.00 after 5:00 p.m. at the City of South Lake Tahoe owned parking garage at Heavenly Village.

Due to the recent implementation of the new license plate reader system at the parking garage, the City now has flexibility to establish variable parking garage rates.

Businesses in the area who attract an evening crowd for music, dining and entertainment, contacted Cityy staff and requested a reduced evening rate.

Douglas County deputies seek two for alleged shoplifting at Ulta

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying two persons of interest in a theft at Ulta Beauty, located at 911 Topsy Lane in Carson City.

On February 03, 2016 at approximately 4:35 pm, a female entered the store and began shopping and asking questions about products. At approximately 4:59 pm, a male entered the store and walked directly to the female and began talking to her.
