Chance of some rain, snow and cooler temperatures in the week ahead for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold front will bring a chance of snow showers and winds to the Lake Tahoe Basin Monday night into Tuesday, with another chance on Christmas Day and next weekend. While there are no major storms on the horizon, any precipitation is welcome at this time.

Snow showers are forecast across the region late Monday evening through Tuesday morning. There is potential for light accumulations impacting the Tuesday morning commute around Cedarville, Susanville, Lovelock, and possibly the Reno-Tahoe area. For most spots amounts look to be mainly under one inch, but even a light coating can cause travel issues.

Gusty southwest winds will affect much of the region Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Stronger winds are possible for areas along Highway 395 from Carson City to Mammoth to Bishop. Winds will switch to the northwest after sunrise Tuesday and remain gusty.

Colder temperatures will sweep in behind the front for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Christmas Eve Thursday. Readings will run 5 to 10 degrees below normal. Morning lows will be quite chilly with teens in Western Nevada cities and single digits to near zero in many mountain valleys.

There is potential for a more unsettled pattern starting just after Christmas Day according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno. Periods of rain or snow along with gusty winds are possible. Factor that into your travel plans between Christmas and New Years.
