Strong earthquakes felt all over Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada and California

1:35 a.m. update 12/28/16: There are widespread reports of those feeling the series of earthquakes and aftershocks this morning, from Lodi and Sacramento, to Reno and Lake Tahoe, and beyond. The have been 11 seismological events in the Hawthorne and Bridgeport area, and two in Tonopah since midnight, ranging from 1.9 to 5.7 in magnitude.

1:00 a.m. update 12/28/16: In the last 30 minutes there have been six measurable earthquakes in the same region, all centering around the town of Hawthorne, Nevada. The first one struck at 12:18 a.m. and has been updated to a 5.7 magnitude, followed by another 5.7 at 12:22 a.m., 3.6 at 12:29 a.m., 3.0 at 12:39 a.m., 1.9 at 12:44 and 3.5 at 12:48 a.m.

The first two were felt from the Sierra Foothills and Yosemite up to Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Stagecoach.

Earthquakes aren't normally felt in South Lake Tahoe, but at 12:18 a.m. on December 28, that is exactly what happened, prompting everyone onto social media to ask, "Did you feel it?"

According to the University of Nevada's Seismological office,a 5.8 earthquake hit 18 miles WSW of Hawthorne, Nevada, 25 miles NNE of Mono Lake, CA. It was followed by another measuring 5.7 in the same area at 12:22 a.m. and a 3.6 at 12:29 a.m.

Reports of feeling the earthquake are coming in from Yosemite, Reno, Carson City and many other areas. Items were broken in homes in Hawthorne, but at this hour that is all that has been reported.
