Bear cubs Eloise and Lucinda taken to new home in the wild; Six cubs remain at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two of the bears who spent the winter at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) center have left and heading to their new home. There are six cubs left, all waiting for their release dates which are provided by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

All eight cubs have undergone amazing transformations since first arriving, some almost one year ago. They all arrived under different circumstances - burns, injuries, or they were separated from their mothers at a very young age.

Photo of the week: Black bear cub poses in South Lake Tahoe

A mama bear and her three cubs were living near an apartment complex at the Y in South Lake Tahoe for several months. One day while mama bear was away, local Erik Dahman got a photo of one of the cubs. He pulled out his camera, the cub looked up at him, stood up on it's hind legs, put its paw on the tree, tilted its head, and Erik took the shot.

Thank you Erik for this great photo!

Importance of understanding dangers of cold water shock

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

"The sudden lowering of skin temperature on immersion in cold water represents one of the most profound stimuli that the body can encounter." Golden and Tipton in Essentials of Sea Survival

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is increasing their educational campaign for boaters and swimmers to understand the dangers of cold water at Lake Tahoe.
