In the year 1921, New York Yankee Babe Ruth hit his 138th homerun as the team made their first World Series appearance, Coco Chanel introduces "Chanel No. 5". Boeing obtains orders for aircraft and abandons furniture-making, Albert Einstein receives the Nobel Prize in Physics, Woodrow Wilson (until March 4) and Warren G. Harding (from March 4) were president, and technology made advancements towards what would be the first television. Charles Bronson, Nancy Reagan, and John Glenn were born.

It’s time to sign up for the South Tahoe Babe Ruth 2020 season!

Last year, all three of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Star age divisions were Nevada State Champions. Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.

Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

The South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth Organization would like to thank the following community members and businesses who so graciously helped our THREE Nevada State Championship Teams (13-year olds, 14-15 year olds, and 16-18 year olds) compete at the Regional Tournament for the Pacific Southwest with their donations! Over 40 local youth benefited from this generosity by getting to play at the “next” level (one step away from the World Series)! The players had an amazing experience thanks to the community support in our little town here on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. THANK YOU ALL!

South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13 All Stars knocked out of regional playoffs

The South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13 All-Stars were defeated Wednesday, ending their bid for the World Series. They lost their final game to the team from Carbon, Utah 11-4.

The boys played some great games to get to the regional level and met up against some tough opponents. The following boys played a tough tournament and had a great experience of playing the best teams in Babe Ruth Baseball while representing South Lake Tahoe and Nevada.

South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth 15U representating state of Nevada at regional tournament

With three South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth teams winning the Nevada state title, the postseason is an exciting one as all teams represent not only South Lake Tahoe but the whole state.

The South Tahoe Babe Ruth 15U (13-15-year-olds) team is currently representing Nevada at their regional tournament in Taft, Calif. They lost their first game to Piute (Utah South) 5-4. They then beat Bel Mateo (Nor Cal 2), 8-6 to advance to the next round.

Their next game is against Palo Alto (Nor Cal 1) on Wednesday, game time is 1:00 p.m.

South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13 All Stars lose to Hawaii, but still in the running

On Tuesday the South Tahoe 13 All-Stars lost to last year’s World Series Champions, Hawaii. 13 – 0. Tahoe is now in the Secondary Bracket looking to came back and play in the Championship Game Friday.

The next game for South Tahoe is on Wednesday, July 24, against Carbon, UT.

South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13 All Stars advance in the Regional Playoffs

Fresh off their Nevada State Championship win in Reno two weeks ago, the South Tahoe 13 All-Stars are now in Helper, Utah for the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament.

On Monday, July 22 they played the Utah Beavers. South Tahoe was down by 4 - 0 in the 5th inning but demonstrated true grit and rallied back to win in the bottom of the 7th inning 5 - 4. South Tahoe now advances to play Hawaii on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

Another South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth team advances toward World Series

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Earlier this week the South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-star team became the Nevada State champs and are now headed to the regional finals in Utah.

South Tahoe Babe Ruth all-stars beat South Reno to become Nevada State Champs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a close on Tuesday night as the South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-star team became the Nevada State champs after beating South Reno 12-11 in extra innings. They beat their opponents in the state tournament this past weekend 11-2 and 21-5.

The twelve teens from the South Shore are now headed to Utah for the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament July 22-27.

Parade, food trucks and fireworks highlight South Lake Tahoe 4th of July

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

Cannabis business applicants question evaluation scores - File appeals with City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two businesses that were not selected to go further in the process of vying for one of three cannabis retail store licenses have filed appeals with the City of South Lake Tahoe. They are questioning the fairness of the selection process, and one is stating that all three applicants who had the top scores evaluation scores should be disqualified. A third applicant said he is in the process of filing an appeal.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, students had to put their jackets back on, as the weather cooled down. A trio of students will take turns acting as student council president, and a 13-year-old partnership on the baseball pitch comes to an end.

Students attended Industry Day on Tuesday to learn about different careers. They heard presentations from a range of companies, including the nutrition department and rehabilitation center of Barton Memorial Hospital.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

With only two months until summer, South Tahoe High School is getting ready for end-of-year school spirit activities and dances. Students also took the time to prepare for tonight’s Black Light Dance and celebrate Earth Day.

On Campus
This week, students went online to select their schedule for next year.

Black Light Dance is in the student union 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. tonight. Before the dance, the Black Light Rally is being held in the school’s gym at noon.

Harrah’s Casino hosted a job fair Tuesday for students interested in summer jobs.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Play Ball! There is still a few feet on top of the baseball diamonds but its never too early to plan baseball tryouts.

Player evaluations/tryouts will be held in March and those playing have to choose one of the following dates. Arrive 30- 45 minutes prior to the listed start time to sign in and warm up:

Friday, March 15 (sign-ins will start at 5 p.m. this day) - 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 16 - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Sunday, March 17 - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Kenneth Carl Rollston 1944 - 2017

Kenneth Carl Rollston died on January 3, 2017 while on a trip to Monterey.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Carpenter Rollston; his sisters Joanne, Garol, Lynne, and Marci; his sons Jim and Brian and their wives Keri and Viktoria; Nancy's sons Christopher and Erik and their wives Yvonne and Andrea; and six grandchildren on whom he doted: Ryland and Kaj, Zane and Miranda, and Griffin and Maggie.

Author Guy Clifton presents Jack Dempsey's Days in Nevada

Author Guy Clifton will speak on his book Dempsey in Nevada in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 6, at 10:00 am.

Many people are surprised to learn that Jack Dempsey once called Nevada home. Dempsey left footprints all over the Silver State that affected the entire sporting arena.

He helped usher in the era known as “The Golden Age of Sport” along with baseball’s Babe Ruth, football’s Red Grange, golf’s Bobby Jones and tennis’ Bill Tilden.

Man who inspired South Lake Tahoe act of kindness movement dies of ALS

Just over two months ago, we wrote about how a large group of South Tahoe High alumni were rallying behind one of their classmates, Kevin Sullivan, who was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

At October's homecoming football game at STHS, many of Kevin's classmates from the class of 1984 and former teammates from the wrestling and football teams came together to honor Kevin and fondly share their memories.

South Lake Tahoe man with ALS inspires acts of kindness

"Family" is a word that can sum up what happened during Friday's STHS homecoming parade and football game.

Though not related, about 70 graduates, most of them from the Class of 1984, came together over the weekend to honor another one of their classmates stricken with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Kevin Sullivan, 50, is the second graduate of South Tahoe High's class of '84 to afflicted with ALS. Todd Fields died in 1999 at the age of 33.

South Tahoe baseball program fundraising for new scoreboard

There has been a lot of work completed on the baseball fields in South Lake Tahoe, including a new diamond for local little league teams. One needed item wasn't on the list of projects completed with Measure S funds was replacing the old and broken scoreboard so a fundraising effort has begun to replace it.

South Tahoe High varsity baseball coach Starbuck Teevan started a GoFundMe page in order to help with the $18,500 needed for a new scoreboard.

Babe Ruth 2015 Registration

It is now time to sign up to play in the 2015 Babe Ruth season in South Lake Tahoe.

The next sign updates will be on January 21 and 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kahle Community Center, February 5 and 25 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then again at the Ice Arena at the same time on March 5.

Tryouts will then be held on Sunday March 22 and 29 at 10 a.m.

The Babe Ruth League is expecting a six team with with 12 players on each team. Joining the players on each roster will be a Manager, Coach and Assistant Coach (a Varsity Player).

Jean "The Dancing Machine" Dahlinger celebrates her 100th birthday at Barton

The year was 1914. Charlie Chaplin appears in his first movie. Ford Motor Company announces an 8 hour work day and a wage for employees of $5/day. Woodrow Wilson is President and Babe Ruth makes his major league debut. November 12th of that year was when Jean Dahlinger of South Lake Tahoe was born.

Today, 100 years later, Jean celebrated her 100th birthday at the Barton Mountain Cafe with family, friends and community members. Known as "The Dancing Machine," Jean was serenaded by the South Tahoe High Jazz Band as they played "Happy Birthday" and "America the Beautiful."

Fifty canine (K9) teams are expected at this year's South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association's annual K9 trials on October 5.

This K9 Trial will determine the top K9 Teams for the year. This fun event is open to the public and starts around 8:00 AM at the Babe Ruth Baseball fields at 1090 Lyons Avenue. The rest of the events will take place at various locations around the city.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association will host the 5th annual K9 Trials on Sept. 21-22 in South Lake Tahoe. It is anticipated that 50 K9 teams from police departments throughout California and Nevada will compete in the competition. The narcotics trials will be held on Friday, September 21 at the Royal Valhalla Motor lodge at 2pm.
