Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation held their annual Rewards for Excellance Scholarship program on May 22 at Harvey's Convention Center, awarding local high school and Lake Tahoe Community College students with scholarships.

Student honorees and their guests enjoyed lunch while 20 scholarships totaling $18,500 were presented by members Julie Gudaitis, Velma Schnoll, Louisa Boone and Carolyn MacRae.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the City formed in 1965 it was incorporated as a general law city for the purpose of having more local control over public services such as police, fire, and snow removal.

Now there is discussion about changing to a charter city. During their March 5 meeting, Councilmember Cody Bass asked that this subject come forward at a future meeting and Councilmembers Jason Collin and Devin Middlebrook said they were interested in learning more about what the differences are between the two, and what it would mean to South Lake Tahoe to switch.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is taking a first, big step toward helping address the lack of affordable student housing in the community by leasing a five-unit apartment building near Ski Run Blvd.

The college's trustees gave authority to school administration to sign a five-year lease with the owner of that apartment building during their meeting Tuesday evenings. The lease starts on July 2, 2019.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is hosting one of their popular Fireside Chats on Tuesday, May 28 with speaker Jerry Blackwill presenting the Construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Join them by the fireplace at the historic Camp Richardson Hotel at 7:00 p.m.

Blackwill is the president of the Truckee Donner Railroad Society.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.

In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All involved parties reached a settlement today concerning the May 2018 boulder rolling incident at Emerald Bay. At that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) received a complaint about the contractors hired to build a retaining wall at Emerald Bay on SR89. In that complaint, a video was provided that showed equipment pushing a large boulder over the edge of the road as crews cheered. As the boulder rolled it took out or damaged several trees, including a majestic Sugar Pine.

For the second day in a row, a Deceuninck – Quick-Step cyclist claimed his first WorldTour stage win at the Amgen Tour of California, with 23-year-old French rider Rémi Cavagna spending hours on a solo ride several minutes ahead of the peloton.

About an hour into the race day, a breakaway including the USA Cycling National Team’s reigning U.S. U23 National Champion Alex Hoehn (Lenexa, Kansas) and Cavagna (FRA) built their lead to over 10 minutes and ended up spending 100 miles out front of the peloton.

I was on the beach today for my first Bachelorette Party Yoga Practice of the season. These sessions are some of my favorite. I love being outside. I love looking at the lake and the mountains. I love sharing in the practice of Yoga for such a joyful event. I am also very good at connecting with and recognizing how prepared each group is for the practice that day.

Liberty Utilities and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) are working together on a proposal to reduce the risk of unwanted wildfires on approximately 6,300 acres of forest in the Lake Tahoe Basin along 55 miles of power line corridors.

The Liberty Utilities Resilience Corridors Project would help create healthier and more resilient forests while reducing the risk of unwanted wildfires that could ignite either from vegetation coming in contact with utility infrastructure or failures of infrastructure.

Participants in El Dorado County Wellness Center programs will have a chance to show off their artistic skills in the “Each Mind Matters” art exhibit hosted by the Tahoe Art League. The exhibit is at Lake Tahoe Community College April 29 – May 3, in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The art that will be on display has been created through Art Angels, a program of the Tahoe Art League.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The free college program at Lake Tahoe Community College, the College Promise, was just awarded a $150,000 grant to enhance and expand the program. They were just one of three community colleges in the state to receive the grant.

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Promise program provides a free year of tuition for first-time, full-time students. With this grant award, LTCC can further enhance the program, adding free services and extra support to improve Promise student success.

Up until only a few decades ago, for as long as humans have existed, parenting has been guesswork. We are lucky enough to live in an exciting time where we have research to find evidence for what parenting strategies and qualities lead to the most successful outcomes for children. Of course, there is not one cookie cutter way for each child, and being flexible in learning what works best for your child is essential.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and offers our community a time to increase awareness of the issues related to child maltreatment, identify strategies to strengthen families and understand how everyone in our community can be an everyday hero for children.

Sure, I like most of the vehicles I test, but there are some that stand out. Then from those stand out motor vehicles, we can find the best of the best. When you factor in price or bang for the buck, that best of the best gets very small, maybe two or three vehicles. The new Genesis G70 is one of them. Upon her arrival in Nevada from Monterey, California, Nancy pondered the best way to explore the interesting state she now calls home. A friend suggested she travel the state photographing each town, which Nancy refined to Nevada’s post offices.
