America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride 2014

Every year since I've had a channel I have been covering Bike The West's signature bicycling event America's Most Beautiful Bike ride; though, over the years I've varied dramatically on how I have chosen to cover it. By tradition, I always cover the bicycle race on foot to give me a different perspective to the people who cover it on bicycle helmet cams or in a car.

Dedication for Latest Phase of Stateline to Stateline Bike Path

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.

The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.

Draft Tahoe Valley Area Plan Ready for Public Review

The Draft Tahoe Valley Area Plan and accompanying documents were released Wednesday, paving the way for finalization after agency and public review and upcoming comment periods. After community meetings and months of review and planning, the "Town Center" concept has been adopted along with "Greenbelt" portions.

The plan reflects the City of South Lake Tahoe's effort to rekindle the economic vitality and spirit of the Tahoe Valley Community. The plan outlines the community's strategy for resurrection.

Over $550,000 Awarded by TRPA to Lake Tahoe Organizations

"On Our Way" grants totaling over $550,000 were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). Six projects that aim at sustainability and improved mobility options around Lake Tahoe will now be able to move forward due to the grants.

NHP Keeping an Eye on Bicyclists and Motorists on the Road

The Nevada Highway Patrol recently stepped up enforcement of Nevada's Share the Road laws, pulling over 200 motorists who violated the law and issued them warnings.

Now its turn for the NHP to turn the tables and watch for bicyclists not in compliance.

Share The Road Campaign Started in Northern Nevada

In an effort to keep bicyclists safer on Nevada roads, the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has joined forces with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) in a SHARE THE ROAD campaign. They will be stepping up enforcement to ensure that motor vehicles are sharing the roads with the bicyclists and reducing the accidents between the two.

Spring is here which means Nevadans will be taking to the road to get some exercise and soak up some sun, so you will begin to see more people biking along the roads in Nevada.

2014 Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit to Highlight Alternative Transportation

Pedestrian and bicycle transportation and safety will be among the topics at the 12th annual Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit, scheduled for March 11 and 12 at the Atlantis Casino Resort in Reno.

Developed to augment statewide bicycle and pedestrian resources, the summit will provide the latest information on bicycle tourism, facility planning and design, safety, enforcement and education initiatives, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations, as well as Safe Routes to School program information.

New Year, New Set of Laws in California and Nevada

With hundreds of new laws every year for the past 45 years, one might wonder if anyone knows them all or can keep track of the changes. There are new laws on the books for both California (800 new laws) and Nevada (45 new laws) that Lake Tahoe residents might want to brush up on.

Over 500 South Lake Tahoe Students Complete We Can! Program

Congratulations to the five hundred and sixty-seven students from Lake Tahoe Unified School District who participated in Barton Health’s sixth annual We Can! program. We Can, which stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition, is a 7-week program designed for 4th and 5th graders that encourages healthy eating habits, activity, exercise, and overall wellness. We Can! is a national program that is implemented locally by Barton Health and the school district’s physical education teachers.

South Lake Tahoe's 2nd Annual Holiday Parade on Saturday

The 2nd Annual South Lake Tahoe Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday, December 14. Spectators will line the parade route from the top of Ski Run Blvd to TJMaxx at the Y. When the parade starts the forecast is sunny and 40 degrees.

Charges of Vehicular Manslaughter Filed Against Douglas County District Court Judge

Vehicular manslaughter charges were filed today by the Douglas County DA Mark Jackson against Judge Michael Gibbons. On August 20, 2013, cyclist Joseph Longo was killed in an accident near Pinenut and East Valley Roads in the Carson Valley. Charges state that Gibbons failed to exercise due care when overtaking or passing Longo who was traveling in the same direction. Gibbons is accused of failing to pass at a safe distance and not using due care to avoid a collision.

South Lake Tahoe Successes Highlighted in Today's State of the City Address

Mayor Tom Davis touched on more than a couple of dozen points during his State of the City Address which was presented to an overflowing full house at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Among the Davis's highlighted city successes for the year:

Linear Park - Over $600,000 was spent on a paved bike path, landscaping and an additional 22 lights on a stretch from Wildwood Avenue to just before Pioneer Trail.

Free Bike Racks Available to Local Businesses

The City of South Lake Tahoe has bike racks available for local businesses to use within the city limits. The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition designed the racks and is encouraging businesses to apply to have the racks available to their customers and clients.

If interested, request an application from the coalition by emailing them at biketahoe@aol.com. Once approved, the city will deliver the free racks but it is up to the business to install them.

Bijou Community Park is Revamped During 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day

Employees of Heavenly and Kirkwood Mountain resorts and their friends and family members teamed together for the 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Sunday, September 21st. The 312 participants volunteered to revamp Bijou Community Park, putting in a combined effort of 936 volunteer hours Saturday. Volunteers laid sod to build a family picnic area, painted signs and picnic tables, planted shrubs, cleared bushes, redistributed wood chips, resurfaced the skate park, raked the volleyball courts, picked up trash, and cleaned up the bicycle path along Al Tahoe Boulevard.

Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue promises beautiful ride around the lake

Bicyclist flown to Renown after being struck by utility truck

A 25-year-old man riding a bicycle was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno early Tuesday morning after being hit by a utility truck, South Lake Tahoe police report.

The bicyclist, Donovan Boling, sustained significant injuries in the accident, reported at 2:45 a.m. in the area of Wildwood Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The 29-year-old driver of the truck told South Lake Tahoe police that he didn't see the bicyclist when the accident happened. The bicyclist was reported to not being wearing a helmet.

Attempted bank robbery at El Dorado Savings

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is requesting assistance from the public to help identify a suspect, who attempted to rob the El Dorado Savings Bank located at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd, in the Bijou Shopping Center, at about 3:30 this afternoon.

Bank robber known as 'Fedora Bandit' sentenced to 9 years in prison

David Griffith Osborne, 75, known as the "Fedora Bandit" for his lengthy string of bank robberies in northern California, Lake Tahoe and at least one in Carson City, was sentenced Friday to nine years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for three counts of armed bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Bicyclist runs red light, crashes into skateboarder

On Wednesday, July 17 at around 8:30 p.m. South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to the intersection of US Highway 50 with Heavenly Village Way to investigate an injury traffic collision.

Steven Magelssen, 20, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his bicycle southbound on US Highway 50 in the center left turn lane. He was approaching a red traffic signal at Heavenly Village Way. Pablo Bobadilla, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his skateboard, and in the company of other pedestrians, while attempting to cross Highway 50 in a marked crosswalk.

New bicycle path part of plan to connect all of Lake Tahoe with trails

A one-mile section of new multi-use path at Stateline, Nev., near the South Shore casinos, was unveiled to the public Thursday, June 20, 2013, marking the beginning of what will eventually become a system of trails that circumnavigates the lake.

Armed South Lake Tahoe man arrested after allegedly strangling mother

A 21-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested Wednesday and faces felony battery and resisting charges after allegedly strangling his mother until she was unconscious and then eluding police on a bicycle, authorities said.

Skylor Klisch was arrested after South Lake Tahoe police officers caught up with him during a chase in which the man was peddling a bicycle near Lake Tahoe Boulevard. He was found to be in possession of a 22-caliber hand gun with ammunition. The battery happened on Tahoe Island Drive at around 6:30 a.m.

South Lake Tahoe man admits to Sunday burglary at South Shore Bikes

South Lake Tahoe police arrested a man following a burglary Sunday of South Shore Bikes on Emerald Bay Road.
Lee Sparks, 34, was arrested early Monday at Barton Memorial Hospital and admitted to the burglary and taking a bike, South Lake Tahoe police report.

Sparks was at the hospital being treated for cuts to his arms. Blood was found at the business where officers noted Sparks allegedly had forced entry into the shop through a roof event and exited through a window.

Bicycle ridership increases when helmets not mandatory

Free Concert at the Hempen' Inn this Sunday

An outdoor free music concert is being held this Sunday, September 30 as a means to raise funds for Adam Rose. On August 21 of this year, Adam was riding his bicycle and was struck by an alleged drunk driver at 12th Street and Emerald Bay Road. He was care-flighted to Reno, was in critical condition for approximately two weeks and is now recuperating at home. Both Adam's arms and legs were broken and he is currently confined to a wheelchair. He faces over six months of rehabillitation. He will be present at the event.

Lam Watah trailhead parking at Stateline closed through mid-October

The Tahoe Transportation District and the U.S. Forest Service are asking the public to park in alternate locations to access the Lam Watah Trail while work is underway on improvements that are part of the Nevada Stateline-to-Stateline Bike Path project - Phase 1B. Lam Watah Trailhead parking normally is located on the north side of U.S. Highway 50 just past the casinos in Stateline, Nev., on Kahle Drive.

South Lake Tahoe Awarded $475,000 for Bike Paths

The City of South Lake Tahoe has been awarded $475,452 in grant funding from Caltrans through the Bicycle Transportation Account (BTA) among 111 applicants. This grant was written by the City’s grants coordinator, Lori Marino.

The city has identified through annual inspection, several Class 1 bike paths that have exceeded usable life span and are in desperate need of complete reconstruction. The pathways identified, provide key connectivity to various neighborhoods and business districts within the city limits.

South Lake Tahoe Police provide details after car slams into cyclist, gas station

UPDATE 1:39PM: South Lake Tahoe Police have issued a press release regarding Tuesday's hit and run accident. The victim, a 38-year-old man, remains in an intensive care unit at Renown Medical Center in Reno. South Lake Tahoe Police have commended citizens for their part in locating the suspect.

South Lake Tahoe man faces burglary charge in connection with Patient to Patient marijuana collective break-in

South Lake Tahoe authorities have arrested a local man in an alleged burglary attempt at the Patient to Patient marijuana collective.
Leslie Decker, 24, of South Lake Tahoe faces a charge of burglary after he was found on Wednesday night crawling out from a glass door that had apparently been broken with a cement cinder block, said Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. Also found in Decker's possession were several tools.
On July 9 South Lake Tahoe police arrested two others in a separate burglary.

Lake Tahoe agency hosts bicycle community planners from Utah and Oregon

The TRPA has invited bicycle community planners from Portland, Oregon and Park City, Utah for a community speaker panel today, Thursday, July 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Board Room. A similar speaker panel was held on Wednesday at Kings Beach.

Suspect in South Lake Tahoe stabbing remains at large; victim suffers arm wound

UPDATE 6:11PM: One person was stabbed and a suspect is at large and being sought by South Lake Tahoe police Friday evening.
The stabbing happened at about 3:46 Friday afternoon in the area of 11th and Eloise. The suspect is described as late teens, a white male, without a shirt, wearing plaid white and blue shorts, a Boston Celtics ball cap being worn backwards, with a backpack and carrying a knife. The stabbing may have stemmed from an incident where the victim, a 22-year-old man, was riding a bicycle and the suspect was on a skateboard. The victim was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital with a stab wound to his arm, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. David Stevenson.

Ride the Wild Sierra bicycle event

South Lake Tahoe’s road bicycling club, Alta Alpina, has put together four different epic bike rides on 1 day so cyclists can challenge themselves at their own pace. The event is called Ride the Wild Sierra, with the start and finish at Turtle Rock Park in Markleeville, Calif.
Build Your Own Challenge, Kid Carson Challenge, Wild Sierra Century and the 8 Pass Challenge “The World’s Toughest Double Century” all take place June 30, 2012.

New adventure-related events highlight summer at Lake Tahoe South

Lake Tahoe South steps into high endurance overdrive this summer with two new outdoor adventure events that celebrate speed, agility and skill — one with feet to the ground and the other rubber to the road.

Sierra Recon, a high-energy, multi-distance obstacle race screaming the amped premise, “Everyone loves carnage” is set for July 14 at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, while the Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous celebrates the freedom of the wide open road, Aug. 23-26.

South Lake Tahoe authorities reopen Highway 50, evacuations lifted after bomb squad called

UPDATE 8:06PM: Scene is secured, according to South Lake Tahoe Police. Highway 50 reopened as is Safeway. Best Western customers who were evacuated now allowed to return to their rooms.

UPDATE 8PM: Areas near Takela Drive and Fairview on Highway 50 have been blocked off for vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic, passersbys have been told to leave the area, a hotel has reportedly been evacuated, and a bomb squad has been staged at Safeway on Johnson Boulevard, according to South Lake Tahoe Police via dispatch.
At around 6:45 p.m. a bomb squad reportedly responded and was told to stage its operation command center at the Safeway store on Johnson Lane. According to dispatch via scanner a hotel was evacuated, also around 6:45 p.m. It is unknown at this time why the bomb squad was called or what the situation is. However, reports are that authorities were going to use a fire hose to blast water at whatever has been deemed suspicious. It is unclear whether it is a package under scrutiny. As of 7:57PM Highway 50 was still blocked and traffic was diverted.

Lake Tahoe launches public participation campaign for new vision

The North and South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce leaders at Lake Tahoe have joined together to launch a Region-wide public participation campaign to harness the groundswell of support for a new vision to restore and revitalize the Basin. Called TahoeFuture.org, the campaign will focus, over the next 8 months, on two critical land-use and transportation plans that create a blueprint for a revitalized Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe bike group presents program to curb preventable disease in children

There is an epidemic in America of increasing childhood obesity and the ill effects attributed to a chronic sedentary lifestyle and a diet high in fat. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 2/3 of the American public are obese and that childhood diabetics, asthma and cardiovascular risk factors lead to adult morbidity, diabetes and significant psychological impact on the obese children. The organization goes on to state that this may be the first generation in the history of man, that children may not outlive the lifespan of their parents.

Revisiting South Lake Tahoe's attempt at a bicycling world record

Unofficially, (need to confirm paperwork/video verifying our count) we surpassed the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest single line of bicycles; 1,188 bikers pedaled, May 17, from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority visitor center near El Dorado Beach to the Stateline casinos. Lake Tahoe cyclist reported down with head injury, air ambulance responds

Calstar was called to transport a 31-year-old female cyclist who was reported to have suffered head injuries in a bicycle accident at Highway 89 south of Spring Creek. Dispatch reports that a nurse said the woman was hurt and required immediate medical care. It is not known if the cyclist is part of America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride, which is an organized Sunday ride around Lake Tahoe.

Child bicyclist wearing headphones, no helmet injured after being hit by large truck

A 12-year-old boy wearing headphones and riding a bicycle without a helmet was hurt in a collision on Thursday, South Lake Tahoe police report. The accident happened at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Highway 50 when the boy attempted to cross against a red traffic signal.

Lake Tahoe hosts 3,300 plus for America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride

Imagine the scenic beauty of Lake Tahoe with its crystal clear blue waters surrounded by towering majestic snow capped peaks.
