A Chico man who works as a captain for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has been arrested on suspicion of child pornography.

Mark McLeod Wygant, 44, appeared in federal court Friday and is scheduled for preliminary examination Feb. 13, unless he is indicted earlier, which would change the appearance to arraignment, said Lauren Horwood, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Bond was not offered and he remains in custody at Sacramento County Jail.

The following is a summary of accomplishments during 2014 by the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Strategic Priority: Fiscal Sustainability
The most important issue facing cities and local agencies is continued steadfast attention to the budget, both short term and long term fiscal impacts.

· Implemented “budget watch” approach to financial analysis; a year-long effort evaluating state, national and global economic impacts for South Shore economy, and capital investment opportunities

A bond oversight committee is needed with the passage of Measure F in November, the Lake Tahoe Community College's $55 million bond.

All schools and colleges that receive bonds are required to have an oversight committee per California Prop. 39.

The LTCC men's soccer team holds the top spot in the Golden Valley Conference with a 7-0-1 league record and an overall 13-4-3 record in their inaugural season. They will take their five game winning streak into the post-season on Saturday as they try to make their way to a state title.

The team is currently ranked #9 among the community colleges in California, #13 nationally.

A historic donation was made to the Lake Tahoe Community College today, enabling the school to build the Robert Maloff University Center on campus in preparation for offering four year degrees. LTCC has applied to be part of a state pilot program that will bring in baccalaureate degrees to 15 community colleges, beginning with at least one program at each school.

I have worked at Lake Tahoe Community College for over 21 years as a classified employee. In those years, I have seen a lot of changes – many good, some not. I wanted to address something that I haven't seen touched on yet regarding the college’s bond measure, and that is what happens at LTCC if Measure F does not pass.

My name is Dr. Frederick “Fritz” Wenck, DDS, and I’ve been closely involved with Lake Tahoe Community College since its beginning in 1974, when I was elected one of the first LTCC Board of Trustees members. I’d like you to consider, just for a minute, what would happen if the college’s Measure F bond effort failed to pass this Election Day.

Our journey toward Measure F began in May 2013, when Lake Tahoe Community College enacted “Investing In Our Future,” a fiscal stability plan to ensure the sustainability of LTCC for the next 40 years. The first step in this plan was to build a shared vision of the future. In September 2013, LTCC leaders brought community members, faculty, staff, students, K-12 educators, and elected officials together to develop that shared vision.

“A breakdown can pave the way for a breakthrough,” California Governor Jerry Brown said at the Lake Tahoe Summit on August 19.

The governor was speaking about the challenges people face in looking beyond their differences for common ground, whether that’s working to craft the $7.5 billion water bond California voters will consider in November or working across state lines to protect and restore Lake Tahoe.

The public and media are welcome to attend two forums this September to get educated about LTCC's bond measure, Measure F, which will be on the ballot November 4.

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Measure F workshop on Thursday, Sept. 18 @ 5:30 p.m. in the Aspen/Board room at LTCC.

The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce hosts another informational forum on Measure F Wed. Sept. 24, also at 5:30 p.m. in the Aspen/Board room at LTCC.

Lake Tahoe Community College gained the support of the South Lake Tahoe City Council today in their pursuit of $55,000,000 in bond funds through Measure F. The Council voted unanimously to adopt the support resolution.

Dr. Kindred Murillo, Superintendent/President of the Lake Tahoe Community College District, was on hand at Tuesday's City Council meeting to provide an explanation of what the bond would mean to the South Shore community and answer any questions the five council members had.

There are several choices for South Lake Tahoe voters in Tuesday's primary election.

In response to requests from staff and the public that the City budget be easier to find and understand, a new tool that presents the revenues and expenses for each department and over the course of several years is now on the City of South Lake Tahoe's website.

The new service is provided by OpenGov.com.

South Tahoe Now sent a questionnaire out to all of the candidates for El Dorado County Supervisor. We will be posting them in the order received.

1)What do you see as the Number 1 issue facing residents of District 5?

A landscaped plaza near the intersection of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue intersection will be named Champions Plaza. The plaza was part of the previously approved plans for the Harrison Avenue project and will be renamed after the suggestion by City Manager Nancy Kerry at Tuesday's City Council Meeting. Champions Plaza will recognize local athletes who have gained worldwide attention for the South Lake Tahoe community.

There will be a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at South Tahoe High to celebrate the newly completed Sports Medicine Building on Friday, August 23 at 10 am. The public is invited to attend and tour all of the new buildings. The ceremony will include messages by Lake Tahoe Unified School District Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater , school board, community and student members. View the program.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s 38th Annual Commencement Ceremony is Friday, June 28 at 6 p.m. in the LTCC Gymnasium.

This year’s graduation ceremony theme is “One College, One Community,” to showcase the College’s strong commitment to and the close bond it has with the diverse communities that LTCC educates, supports, and is supported by.

The City of South Lake Tahoe received an Award of Excellence from the California Park and Recreation Society for Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach. The City’s recognition in the category of Park Planning will be honored at the 2013 California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference, held in San Jose March 6-8.

South Lake Tahoe police Officer Johnny Poland is out of jail on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to be in court on Feb. 14 to face five federal charges related to witness and evidence tampering.

An outdoor free music concert is being held this Sunday, September 30 as a means to raise funds for Adam Rose. On August 21 of this year, Adam was riding his bicycle and was struck by an alleged drunk driver at 12th Street and Emerald Bay Road. He was care-flighted to Reno, was in critical condition for approximately two weeks and is now recuperating at home. Both Adam's arms and legs were broken and he is currently confined to a wheelchair. He faces over six months of rehabillitation. He will be present at the event.

Just a few years ago home buyers were choosing the Nevada side over the California side when looking for a Lake Tahoe home to purchase. Taxes were lower and schools were better so Nevada was more attractive. But is that still the feeling? There's good news, and bad news, depending on which neighborhood/state you're set on owning a home in.

Douglas County’s financial management practices were recently rated “strong” by Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Rating Services.
As part of its rating, S&P stated that the highlights of the County’s management techniques are its formal financial policies, utilizing external and internal resources for budget assumptions, and engaging in multi-year financial planning, including a new five-year forecast the County created this year, according to a news release issued by Douglas County.
