The tournament is held to pay tribute to Hall of Famer and former Oakland Raider and Lake Tahoe resident Gene Upshaw and raise funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injuries. Upshaw golfed often at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe before his sudden death from pancreatic cancer in 2008, just 3 days after being diagnosed.

Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week

April 20 to 26 marks the 17th annual Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week. In 2014, 55,000 Americans will develop cancer of the head and neck. Though 13,000 people will die from this disease, most cases are preventable.

Causes of Oral, Head, & Neck Cancer
Tobacco use is the most common and preventable cause of head and neck cancer. Tobacco products include cigarettes, snuff and chewing tobacco. Switching from smoking to smokeless products only changes the risk of lung cancer to a risk of oral cancer.

Dr. Seuss Hats Off Exhibition Comes to Lake Tahoe

Few authors are better known than Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, yet, to this day, his Secret Art and his fantastical Hat Collection are virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Ted Geisel created paintings and collected hats which he secreted away in a hidden closet at the Dr. Seuss Estate. This is the first time ever that Dr. Seuss’s hats have ever traveled outside his home.

Heads Shaved to Raise Funds for Cancer Research

Bailey Johnson was a four time Stage 4 cancer survivor by the time he was 5. Now a student at South Tahoe High, Bailey underwent surgery just over three weeks ago to help straighten his spine which was damaged while undergoing radiation.

Caitlyn Drennan is 3 1/2. She was diagnosed with cancer at birth and underwent chemotherapy when just 2 days old. She now needs a walker due paralysis below the knee but is a survivor of Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

What was developed by three businessmen from New York City in 1999 as a way to give back to their community has turned into over 1,000 nation wide events each year that are held to raise money to help find cures for childhood cancer. Since becoming a non-profit in 2005, St. Baldrick's Foundation has given out $125,251,567 in grants.

Incline Village Resident Wins Trip to Super Bowl

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center opened a new cancer treatment center at 1154 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe July 1, 2013.

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center is a state-of-the-art oncology and hematology facility now offering treatment in five locations including Carson City, Fallon, Gardnerville and Sparks. The South Lake Tahoe facility will expand the reach of Sierra Nevada Cancer Center making cancer treatment more convenient and closer to home for those living at the Lake.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department raises $6,000 for St. Baldrick's Foundation

South Lake Tahoe Firefighters participated and raised $6,000 in the second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 8. The St. Baldrick’s foundation was formed in 2005 and surpassed $100 million in donations last year for childhood cancer research across the nation.
