COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another seven residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, two are in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, one was removed from the El Dorado Hills count one in Greater Placerville, and five in the Lake Tahoe Region.

The new cases: 1 is under the age of 18, 5 aged 18-49, and 1 aged 50-64.

Another 214 people were tested for the coronavirus and 207 negative tests results were received.

There have been another seven assumed recoveries with 154 assumed active cases.

The new cases: 2 are under the age of 18, 7 aged 18-49, 3 aged 50-64, and 1 aged 65 or older.

Another 343 people were tested for the coronavirus and 330 negative tests results were received.

There have been another six assumed recoveries with 150 assumed active cases.

Of the new cases, two are under the age of 18, 16 aged 18-49, three aged 50-64, and one is 65 or older.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials today announced 22 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, ten of those in the Lake Tahoe region, six in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and three each in Placerville and El Dorado Hills. Of the new cases, 11 are male, 11 are female, five are under the age of 18, 11 are aged 18-49, and six are aged 50-64.

There were an additional 277 tests for the coronavirus administered.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Students at South Tahoe High School returned from a week-long Spring Break tanned and ready for the final two months before summer. This week was quiet as students prepared for the Black Light Dance, prom, AP testing, and the baseball team played at Reno Ace’s stadium.

The Black Light Dance will be held on April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union. Students dress up and paint themselves to match the theme. A surprise student DJ will be featured, so bring your glow sticks, Vikings.

Ribbon cuttings welcome in two new Lake Tahoe businesses

The Tahoe Chamber and South Lake Tahoe community members stopped by two ribbon cutting ceremonies on Friday, one at Doob Lake Tahoe in the Heavenly Village and the other at TaCo. Cantina and Restaurant at Harveys Tahoe.

Ceremony, street closures part of Monday inauguration at State Capitol in Carson City

Nevada's 30th governor will take office on Monday, Jan. 7 at an inauguration ceremony held in front of the State Capitol in Carson City.

Stephen F. Sisolak, Nevada's first Democratic governor in two decades, was elected on Nov. 6, 2018. He will take the oath of office on the front steps of the Capitol Monday at 11:30 a.m., according to his inauguration web site.

Capitol grounds will open prior to the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and a public reception will follow at the Nevada State Library and Archives located on the northeast corner of the Capitol complex.

Viewing party for 1st blue moon total lunar eclipse since 1866

The first blue moon total solar eclipse seen in almost 152 years will occur on Wednesday, January 31 and the public is invited to a free viewing party at the Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City.

To catch this once in a lifetime event you'll have to get up early though as the observatory on the Western Nevada College will open at 3:15 a.m. Viewing will be available until 7:00 a.m.

One Carson High teen dies from injuries in Kings Canyon crash

Family members confirmed via social media Sunday that 16-year-old Carson High School student Timothy Jones, one of seven students involved in a Nov. 9 crash on Kings Canyon, has died.

Timothy had been in a medically induced coma since the accident, in which two other high school students were critically injured. Timothy was an honor student and played baseball for Carson High School.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said he was briefed Sunday by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Trick or Treat at the Historic Wungnema Open House

The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation (FCCPR), is hosting an Open House at the Wungnema House located in Mills Park, Carson City, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017. This is an all ages event, children are welcome, and may come in costume for some old fashioned trick or treating. Parents and children will have an opportunity to learn about this historic home, Native American culture, and the Wungnema family's contributions to the town.

Nevada State Fair this weekend, El Dorado County Fair follows

Area residents and visitors can enjoy two big fairs with rides, music and exhibits. The 2017 Nevada State Fair runs from June 8 to June 11, and the El Dorado County Fair goes from June 15-18.

The 2017 Nevada State Fair returns this week to Carson City bringing four days of fun, entertainment, carnival rides, culture, music and more to Mills Park.
From Thursday, June 8 to Sunday, June 11, the Nevada State Fair will showcase exhibits from each participating county throughout the Silver State.

WNC’s youngest nursing grad ever makes dreams come true quickly

In the 35 years that Western Nevada College has been offering an associate degree in nursing program, there hasn’t been a graduate as young as Morgan Tingle.
Tingle will graduate with her Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing at the age of 19 on Monday, May 22. She was also the youngest admitted into the program as a 17-year-old two years ago.

Carson High student and adult die in rollover vehicle accident

UPDATE 9AM: Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes offered condolences on behalf of Carson High School to family members after it was learned a 16-year-old CHS male student was killed in a rollover crash in Goni Canyon early this morning. An adult also died in the accident. The names of the victims have not been released.

“On behalf of the school, our students and faculty, we are very sorry for this loss. Our thoughts go out to family and friends of the student,” said Stokes.

Area teens compete in Rotary Speech Contest

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club hosted the Rotary District 5190 Area 9 speech contest finals on Friday, April 15 at MontBleu Resort. Each Rotary club in the area had individual contests, then the winners went onto Friday's Area final.

The topic for the speeches was "Be a Gift to the World."

Carson City teen dies at Lake Tahoe in water-related accident

A Carson City teenager died Saturday after authorities were called to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe for an accident on the water. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed the victim is a 15-year-old Carson High School student.

The teen’s name has not been released. A chaplain from Carson City has notified the parents, said Furlong. The teen died after he was taken to a Reno hospital after emergency crews were called to Sand Harbor at around noon Saturday. Washoe County authorities would not confirm if it was a possible drowning.

The short ceremony will be held at the Vietnam Memorial, located in Mills Park in Carson City, NV in the southeast corner of the park at 5 PM. (The park may be accessed from either Saliman Road across from Carson High School).

After the ceremony, a “Welcome Home” social will be held at the High Sierra Brewery Company, located at 302 North Carson Street at 5:30 PM. No Host Bar, free appetizers, and good cheer.

Carson High Booster Club receives a “boost” from the Carson Nugget

Carson City, NV—Carson High School football players will receive new helmets, shoulder pads and other equipment this year thanks to the generosity shown during the annual “Kick-Off Dinner” recently held at Carson Nugget.

At the start of each season, the Carson High Athletic Department and the Carson High Football Boosters raise money to support the program. This year the Carson Nugget provided the venue and split the revenue generated through the sale of alcohol to help the group generate income.

Greenhouse Project fundraiser

An evening to benefit The Greenhouse Project takes place Wednesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at Café at Adele’s in Carson City.
