Kudos: Tahoe Warm Room thanks cleanup volunteers

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank the many community members and volunteers who helped in the cleanup and closing of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room in early April. The Warm Room was open from December 18 through April 1 and provided the first overnight homeless services in the Tahoe Region.

Cleanup of Tahoe Keys oil spill continues

Investigators from the Department of Fish and Wildlife Warden's office were at the Tahoe Keys Marina again on Wednesday, trying to find the source of an oil leak that was discovered on Monday, April 11. They were joined by a press information officer and a biologist, all from the agency's pollution office.

They said was no wildlife impact found at the scene, and all fish in the shallow marina and birds in the area didn't appear to be harmed by the oil.

Kudos: Bread and Broth thanks the HEROs volunteers from Harrah's/Harvey's

Bread & Broth would like to thank the employee volunteers of Harrah's and Harvey's who adopted a day of nourishment at the non-profit's weekly Monday evening dinner on March 28.

“We love helping with the great folks at Bread and Broth,” commented volunteer Jacalyn Andrews. “It warms your heart to be involved with serving a hot meal.”

Jacalyn is a Game Supervisor at Caesars’ Stateline casinos and she and her fellow HEROs volunteer crew members had a great time at the Harrah’s/Harvey’s HEROs Adopt A Day dinner.

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief: Updates on crime, cleanup and murder case

Great news! Compared to last year, our violent crime rate is down 41% (from 112 occurrences in 2014 to 66 in 2015). The news is not all good. Our property crime rate is up 6% (from 516 in 2014 to 548 in 2015). This was not unexpected as we reported on a significant upward trend in property crime 6 months ago. Total crime is down 2.2% over last year.

Kudos: Kirkwood helps out at Bread & Broth

For over 26 years, Bread & Broth has been serving the community by providing free meals to those who struggle to put food on their tables and provide just the basic needs for daily living. As a non-profit that is staffed by an all volunteer crew, B&B relies on our very generous community donors to provide the funds needed to cover the costs associated with providing the dinners.

Kudos: Kiwanians serve up a meal at Bread & Broth

For the past 5 years, the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra has been sponsoring Bread & Broth “Adopt A day of Nourishment” on the second Monday in the month of January. True to form, on January 11, Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra members Jan Lynds, Pat Frega and Bob “Snow Bum” Fleischer were there pitching in at B&B’s evening dinner. The Kiwanis Club’s annual sponsorship is always appreciated by B&B and their volunteers always look forward to working with our “repeat” sponsor volunteers.

Kudos: Azul Latin Kitchen serves at Bread & Broth

Azul Latin Kitchen was the “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor for the Bread & Broth dinner served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall on Monday, January 4. It is a great fit to have the Tahoe Restaurant’s Azul Latin Kitchen join with B&B to provide meals to local individuals who are in need of hot nutritious food along with a warm and secure place to spend an hour or two during Tahoe’s very cold winters.

Kudos: MontBleu Resort employees serve the community

There’s nothing like having a hearty and tasty meat loaf dinner to make you feel like you’re eating at home. Thanks to the “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa and our hardworking Bread & Broth volunteer cooks, that is exactly what B&B’s dinner guests enjoyed at the December 28 Monday evening dinner. The meat loaf was a big hit and despite big “first servings” portions, when “second serving” was announced, many diners returned for a second helping.

Kudos: Gallanty Physical Therapy helps Bread and Broth

By providing meals and “giveaway” food bags, Bread & Broth strives to give hope and comfort to those who struggle with hunger in our community. Thanks to B&B’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsors, filling and well balanced meals are served every Monday at St. Theresa Grace Hall. Knowing that nutritious meals will be served and additional food to take home will be provided, B&B’s Monday evening dinner guests gratefully know that they will not be hungry for at least for that day.

Kudos: South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge hosts Bread & Broth Dinner

Bread & Broth would like to thank the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge #1632 for their Adopt A Day sponsorship of the Monday, October 12th evening dinner. Thanks to the Moose Lodge’s generous donation, the 91 folks who came for dinner were served baked salmon with orange sauce, spaghetti with red sauce, a mixed green salad, a lovely strawberry/cantaloupe salad and a wide assortment of desserts. Although heaping servings were doled out during the first serving at 4:00 p.m., 27 diners returned for the 5:00 p.m. “second” serving of this tasty and nutritious dinner.

Post fireworks beach clean up planned on the South Shore

Locals and visitors can join #teamfireworks, a large effort to remove all debris from South Lake Tahoe's beaches following both the 4th of July and Labor Day fireworks shows.

Over 100,000 people enjoy the fireworks and anytime an area gets that many people, trash is sure to be an issue. Last year's beach clean was originally meant to make sure the debris from the actual fireworks was not left floating on the water or strewn along the beach. While not many parts of fireworks were found, hundreds of pounds of trash was collected.

Gas from Tahoe Tom's leaking into nearby drinking water well

With a $412,900 fine from previous violations in 2007 still outstanding, Tahoe Tom's Gasoline Station in South Lake Tahoe is once again in trouble with the Lahontan Regional Water Board.

Recent water samples from a drinking well at a Stateline area motel near Tahoe Tom's have revealed the presence of the contaminant MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) at concentrations above the drinking water standard for taste and odor. The detection in MTBE from the well have been increasing during the past year, probably as a result of drought conditions lowering the water table.

Douglas County residents recovering from flash flood

Flood recovery measures are being taken in the Fish Springs area of Douglas County after Wednesday night's flash flood closed several roads and damaged homes.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's office, this incident produced hazardous conditions due to the amount of water and dark evening hours which created safety concerns and inhibited immediate damage assessment.

The Reverse 911 was down in Douglas County so emergency messages had to be relayed through the National Weather Service, which is the backup system. Reverse 911 should be back up and working by August 15.

Mud cleanup continues in the Carson Valley

Cleanup efforts continue on roads in the Carson Valley that were covered in mud, dirt and debris after the flooding developed after the wet storm that hit the area on July 20.

Crews from Douglas County as well as private contractors are on the job.

Shortly after the flooding began, County Commission, Staff and East Fork Fire met to develop an action plan and began calling for additional resources from Carson City. A declaration of Emergency was not declared due to fact that the flood did not rise to the level of overwhelming the county’s resources to protect health and safety.

Volunteers Remove 2,260 Pounds of Trash From Six Lake Tahoe Beaches

The League to Save Lake Tahoe had over 120 volunteers participate in their annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanup. They cleaned at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Shoals on the East Shore, and Kiva, Regan and El Dorado beaches on the South Shore for a total of about 3 miles of shoreline.

Joseph and Joan Truxler: Let's All Get Together and Make the Fireworks Better, Make Cleanup Better

They’ve been called unpleasant names that can’t be printed. They’ve received death threats. For a few days one may even assume they were hated. That was then.

They’re being called courageous. They’re being called heroes. They’re being thanked for caring about our environment and bringing the effect of fireworks in the lake to the forefront. That is now.

Lake Tahoe Tourism Officials Denounce Fireworks Lawsuit

With Tahoe South’s two annual fireworks celebrations meeting all state and federal standards throughout their 30-year history, area tourism officials strongly denounced a lawsuit that could threaten the annual July Fourth and Labor Day events as totally unnecessary.
